Sex Education, Agree or Disagree?

We Answered:

I think Sex Ed is important and it should be taught in 10 or 11th grade.

What I highly disagree with is the ideas some school districts have been trying to implement for years that they teach it in elementary school, hand out condoms to grade school kids and starting in first grade they teach about tolerance for homosexual life styles.

What higher ed. institutions have online adjunct instructor positions available?

We Answered:

National University.. their programs are great.
Also, you might want to consider proposing an online course at your school. My school offers math and English 11 classes on line, and they have been huge successes.

Can Special Education Negatively Enable People?

We Answered:

I would first like to thank most of the special education teachers for being, in my opinion, the best educators in our schools since they try to educate in various modes to address various learning styles.

In considering whether the accommodations given to a special needs individual enables that person negatively, I would remind all that accomodations are supposed to "level out" the learning field for the student so they can "compete educationally" in our public school setting. An example of this can be seen in the use of "redirection and focusing" for an ADD/ADHD student. These accommodations were never instituted to be used as an excuse or to be put in place in the "real world" situation that we all must function as adults.

We must celebrate every individual's multiple intelligence realizing that there is no one way to learn or be considered bright. We must help special education students to develop the necessary skills, coping mechanisms, and self-advocacy traits necessary for any adult to be a productive member of society. "Special Education" should not be used as a "crutch" or reason for breaking the law.

So, do the modifications "enable" people? .... only if we foster the belief that we are "crippled" for life without any "locus of control" to take charge of our own destiney and become good citizens of society.

My conclusion is: special education only enables people if we allow people to think they are entitled to a "level learning environment" throughout their productive years as an adult.

Questions for a teaching interview?

We Answered:

They will most likely ask you about your classroom management skills, educational philosophy, goals for the future. They will give you a scenario that would not be common to see how you would react. It depends on the interviewer some can be easy going and others can try to get you at something. They might ask you if you know some educational terms like 504, learning styles, etc.

Help in deciding a profession when my main interests are creative writing, psychology, teaching, art and Engli?

We Answered:

It may seem more glamorous to be a Professor than a teacher at say high school, but grade level teachers have better job security. As a professor, each year your class size fluctuates, and sometimes the class sizes are entirely too small. They may attempt to garnish your wages or let you go, and you must find work on your own.

Unless you teach a core subject, it's important to be practical. In order to become a Professor you have to write papers etc, much like a master paper. Good thesis papers become harder and harder to write in many cases.

I wouldn't suggest journalism at all. If you're sensitive, I wouldn't suggest being a psychiatrist or psychologist in practice, but perhaps a research psychologist that deals with the science behind the treatment rather than the personal treatment itself.

My advice: it sounds like you want to be a teacher. Really, it isn't difficult, and you can start now! You can tutor during college and be a student teacher as you attend. They teach you everything, including the psychology behind different learning techniques and how to handle yourself and different types of teaching. You will find yourself along the way. There will always be a few bad students, won't there? But you will have support and grow as you realize what teaching is really about.

I wanted to be a teacher several years ago, and in a way, I regret that I didn't go with it. Instead I stayed with arts and I paint all day long. Art is always something you can do, and on the side. Art doesn't have to take over your life. You could be an English teacher that likes to paint. It doesn't matter, just do what you love.

Pauline Said:

How do you deal with science?

We Answered:

I'm home educated. I don't do anything like chemistry or physics (they're not needed for the Uni course I'm going to do) but my brother was able to do both subjects successfully right up to the HSC (Year 13) using what he could find at home or easily get from the pharmacy, local store etc.

I have done various critical thinking courses since I was 10 years old though. There's no reason why home educated kids should feel deprived of the opportunity to learn how to think critically for themselves.

PS I was told by a cardiologist a while ago that coughing can help if you reckon you're having a heart attack. So, while the idea of yoga might not be the whole answer, if it relaxes you and therefore your heart muscles, i guess it may help the flow of blood to the heart muscle thus reducing the amount of pain and possibly limiting the potential damage.
