If you major in physical education what are some good jobs out there besides teaching?

We Answered:

Here's a few ideas I got from the US Dept of Labor, based on a degree in physical education:

Recreation supervisors oversee recreation leaders and plan, organize, and manage recreational activities to meet the needs of a variety of populations. These workers often serve as liaisons between the director of the park or recreation center and the recreation leaders. Recreation supervisors with more specialized responsibilities also may direct special activities or events or oversee a major activity, such as aquatics, gymnastics, or performing arts.

Directors of recreation and parks develop and manage comprehensive recreation programs in parks, playgrounds, and other settings. Directors usually serve as technical advisors to State and local recreation and park commissions and may be responsible for recreation and park budgets.

Fitness directors oversee the fitness-related aspects of a health club or fitness center.

Sports instructors teach professional and nonprofessional athletes individually. They organize, instruct, train, and lead athletes in indoor and outdoor sports such as bowling, tennis, golf, and swimming. Because activities are as diverse as weight lifting, gymnastics, scuba diving, and karate, instructors tend to specialize in one or a few activities.

Group exercise instructors conduct group exercise sessions that involve aerobic exercise, stretching, and muscle conditioning.

Personal trainers work one-on-one with clients either in a gym or in the client’s home.

Professional scouts evaluate the skills of both amateur and professional athletes to determine talent and potential. As a sports intelligence agent, the scout’s primary duty is to seek out top athletic candidates for the team he or she represents. At the professional level, scouts typically work for scouting organizations or as freelance scouts.

Umpires, referees, and other sports officials officiate at competitive athletic and sporting events.

Recreational therapists, also referred to as therapeutic recreation specialists, provide treatment services and recreation activities to individuals with disabilities or illnesses. Using a variety of techniques, including arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings, therapists treat and maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their clients.

Good luck!

What is the best school for a physical education degree?

We Answered:

You definitely can go anywhere and it would not make a difference. All teachers start out making the same amount of money no matter where your degree comes from or what subject you teach. Gym teachers are also a dime a dozen...but I don't think you could do anything to improve your chances of getting a job, unless, of course, you know someone that works at the school already =]

Should I quit my Teaching Job???

We Answered:

I think the main problem is that you're teaching "in the suburbs of Chicago".
If you're not opposed to moving, trying moving to a small town in the south; maybe Arkansas, Missouri, or Tennessee.
Teaching in a small school (1,500 students or less for K-12) would probably be something you'd really enjoy. My school had about 700 students, K-12, and nearly every teacher got along with every student.
With smaller schools, students and teachers bond and build closer relationships. As long as you're not an ******, you'd probably have a great relationship with both the students and teachers.
Try it out, you'll love it.

Oh, and the cost of living in the south is MUCH lower than that in Chicago. You'd likely make $28,000 - $35,000/year working in a small southern town, but with that money, you could easily afford to buy a nice house, vehicle, and still pay all of your bills.

I paid $50,000 for the house I'm living in. It's a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom brick house, approximately 1,300 square feet on 1 acre. I've checked around, and seen similar houses in California selling for $200,000. So, the pay may not be as much as in Chicago, but the cost of living will be MUCH MUCH lower.

Attention Physical Education Teachers! What age group would you recommend teaching and how do you like your job

We Answered:

In my area, PE jobs are hard to find. Most people love the job because it has alot of flexibility and can be a powerful way to reach at-risk kids. However, many teachers are abandoning the field because the tests to qualify for the position are extremely hard in California.

I would find a way to have another subject included in the authorization of your teaching license in case there are no positions open.
