I would like to get a job teaching English as a second language? What are the qualifications?

We Answered:

If your friend wants to become a public school teacher, then once he/she has graduated from college, he/she needs to get a Teaching Credential. Some universities have internship programs that could be quite benenficial in gaining experience before taking the plunge. Each state has different requirements, but any reputable teaching credential college will be able to guide him/her and will have the most up-to-date information on what's necessary.

If he/she just wants to teach casually to adults in night school, it's likely that all he/she needs is a college degree. He/She should contact his/her local Adult Education office and find out.

As for the job outlook for the teaching profession, it is very good. Teaching is a tough, stressful, politically-charged job that does not pay well in comparison to someone in another field with the same level of education and experience. In short, few people want to do it! This leaves rather a wide-open market for teachers.

BTW, although it is commendable that your friend is fluent in Spanish (I am, as well), it is ENGLISH as a Second Language, not Spanish, that he/she needs to teach. Unlesss it is a Spanish bilingual immmersion program, speaking Spanish to ESL students is a no-no and will impede their progress in using English. Not to mention that it will piss off the Koreans, Chinese, Russsians, and others taking the class!

Teaching of Urdu language in English speaking countries?

We Answered:

There is not much popular demand for that language in many english speaking countries. However, you may find some private school that are interested or already teaching Urdu. I see, however, people hiring Urdu tutors. It's not such a stable job but you have that while you are looking for a better job.

Teaching Urdu Language in English Speaking Countries?

We Answered:

Urdu does not feature on UK school curriculum and in my honest opinion would be considered as inappropriate to European needs. Definately not a language taught in UK or European countries.
