I am considering relocating to PR and have a lot of questions.?

We Answered:

You want to move away from a crumbling economy, and come here? This is about as bad as it gets, the government here has just given pink slips to thousands of workers in order to keep it's self afloat. The public school system here is in shambles short of funding, short on teachers yes but that didn't stop them from firing a bunch in the government layoff.

The official languages of PR are english and spanish. Yet you will find little in english here. They teach it in schools, but it's a joke and 99% of the children graduating in the public school system here, after taking 12 years of english, can't form a coherent sentence in the language. The government is run in spanish, as is pretty much everything else. You really should be bi-lingual to live here, I know, I wasn't when i moved here 10 years ago and had to learn.

Yes there are collages here and lots of them, she wouldn't have much a problem in that respect except most courses are given in spanish. Do some research and look into which ones focus on english.

Rincon is gorgeous, and the beaches are perfect for you. The housing is a little pricey if you want to live in a safe area. I myself live and work in a tourist zone in Dorado and my car has been stolen, I have been robbed at gunpoint and my husband was assaulted by a drunk police officer. My home has been robbed, and my mother was held hostage in an armed robbery. Is crime bad here? Well PR rates number 18 in the world in murders per capita. There is a serious uncontrolled drug problem here and it leads to a high crime rate.

You mentioned that you are an animal lover, you will find it particularly hard living here. There is a complete disregard for the life of mans best friend here. You will see stray dogs everywhere, starving, sick, abandoned and abused. Some people take to poisoning them in order to control the population because animal control here is a joke. My poor Shi-tsu got out of the house when my toddler accidentally let him out and was poisoned. He got into some poisoned food left out to kill the stray dogs. There is no humane society here, only kill shelters that process dogs like garbage.

Oh and the garbage, ugh, it's everywhere. The beaches are littered by careless people who can't even make it to one of the many trashcans provided to them. The road sides sometimes take on the look of a dump. My girls and I carry trash bags with us when we go hiking or to the beach and we never fail to fill them.

I'm sorry for being so harsh, and don't get me wrong I do love Puerto Rico. I love the small mountain towns, the lovely secluded hard to get to beaches. I also love Vieques, and Culebra. I moved here from the Virgin Islands ten years ago and I have stayed because our business is still going strong and I love the land. But PR has many, many more problems than the states and they are problems that are not new and have no hope for a solution anytime soon. I just think that you should get an un-sugar coated answer that has the truth before you decide to move.

Anybody know a reputable, brick and mortar University where I can get my PhD in Education or an EdD online?

We Answered:

You may want to look into Argosy University. They just started offering Masters and Doctorates in Education online. They have been offering them at their brick and mortar schools for years. I believe the web address is online.argosyu.edu. I have heard good things.

Elementary Teaching Degree Online?

We Answered:

I'd make an appointment with your former university's career services to see what your options are. Considering you've already done a degree, you might be able to do a shortened course for primary teaching if it's on offer. I wouldn't imagine that you could do a teaching degree online since much of the work involves placements in schools and that might not be possible to arrange (especially these days, when schools like to know that the people they have coming in to work with kids are known to be trustworthy and safe).

Looking for a job bank for college Distant ed courses?

We Answered:

Wish I could find one, too. I've had to surf and google to find a few, and their individual websites are always geared towards student admission. Sometimes it's really hard to find the job opportunities area. Good luck!

I want to teach at the college level. How do I get a job?

We Answered:

Depending on your area, you can pick/choose the specific college/university that you most want to teach at, unless you don't have a preference and would teach at any of them.

You will want to go online (or you can call and ask) for an application. Typically they are under the human resource page. You should be able to see what openings the c/u has as well, but I've done this myself and if there isn't a listing I submit anyways (to be ahead if one does open up).

You will want to make sure your resume is updated (with Masters noted on it and your objective to be something such as college adjunct). You will also need copies of your transcripts...I have found that just having a copy in the beginning will suffice, but if they contact you for an actual interview or plan on hiring you, they will want an official copy of you undergrad and grad. You might hold off sending them straight off in the very beginning if each copy costs you money.

When I submitted mine I had a nice cover letter, resume, filled out application, copy of transcripts, and a copy of my teacher license. About a week or so after I sent it, I made a 'follow-up' call to make sure they did receive it, and to ask them when they might fill positions and any other questions I might have.

How to become either an elementary or college teacher?

We Answered:

Hi there
Your two choices require completely different paths. If you decide on elementary education, you would most likely major in education. You will also need to check on the certification requirements for your state. Some states require a Masters. Often you can work towards your Masters while you are teaching. You could get a BA in English, Liberal Arts or Psychology as long as you fulfil the appropriate education requirements.
To teach at the college/university level, you will most likely require a PhD in the subject that you want to teach. Some community colleges hire people with just a Masters, but there are A LOT of English PhD's out there! You do not need education courses. You will serve as a teaching assistant as part of your PhD program (usually, anyway). So you could major in any of your choices (maybe not Liberal Arts - that's pretty amorphous). You would then apply to graduate school to work towards a PhD.
The best thing to do is to talk to your adviser either where you are now, or once you are accepted at a 4 year school.

All the best.
