I'm an Online ESL teacher. What educational games can I let my students play if the class gets boring?

We Answered:

Hi Cherry, have you heard of The Travels of Wiglington and Wenks Virtual World?

I had tried it and I think it is great!

It's a new virtual world for kids and tweens (some even say teens!). It has already received tens of thousands of sign-ups from over 140 countries.

You can travel around the world, adopt all kinds of cool pets, build houses and islands, wear clothings from different countries, play tons of games and more. Best of all, it's free to play and you don't need to download anything to install.

Here's a short description of it.

"The Travels of Wiglington and Wenks promises an experience in which players would be able to travel to factual and mysterious places around the world, travel through time and space, meet famous people from the past, play dozens of enriching and fun games, make new friends and party with them, buy exotic islands, build culture-inspired houses, wear clothes from different countries, explore secret locations, solve mysteries and puzzles and become a legendary traveler!"

Need information on teaching ESL abroad?

We Answered:

Yes, get certified before you go. If you go to a foreign country to take a course you are limiting your options and are often tied to that school/country. Online is fine: try ICAL if you want to go down this route.

Anyone like teaching ESL in Mexico?

We Answered:

Hi Ashley, I'm the same guy that emailed you before but I thought I'd answer your question since no one else has yet!

I taught English for a few months when I first came to Mexico and I loved it! I also have several American / Canadian friends that teach English (or used to) and they all like it too.

Just like any job it has it's pros and cons, and for me one of the hardest things when teaching was when I would be assigned to teach young kids (like 1st grade age) that really didn't care to be there at all and were very rambunctious. That was more like babysitting than teaching, but even then it really wasn't that bad. I would say (if you have the choice) try to teach Teen-aged / College-Aged students since they seem to be the most interested in learning and are just the most fun to be around.

One big issue with teaching English in Mexico is that it is kind of a competitive industry since most Americans looking to go live in Mexico (who aren't retirees) end up teaching English. Your ability to speak perfect English is your biggest asset in Mexico and can land you other kinds of non-teaching jobs too just by having this skill alone.

I really don't think you'll have any problems in finding an English teaching job if you go looking, just because there are so many schools out there, but it's still something to think about. Because of all the Supply and occasional lack of demand, I would recommend that you start making some phone calls to see if you can get some good leads from the US first before you go right down to Mexico.

Melvin Said:

Wish to study in PHD; mixing IT, teaching and Literature, send me cheap online universities' sites. Thanks

We Answered:

You can learn just about any subject at very very low cost at UniversalClass.com. There are hundreds (if not thousands)experts in a field teaching affordable online courses at UniversalClass.com; so not only will you be surprised about how many courses they offer, but how easy it is to join. Also, Universalclass.com allows experts, specialists, or hobbyists (any subject - but you should know it!) teach others what they know and earn a few bucks. Those who set up their classes also set their own price for a course! UniversalClass.com gets a small "cut" but most goes to the instructor/author of a course.

Great program. Works for everybody: online students and online mentors. Win-win.

Steve Said:

Can you be paid as a certified ESL tutor online or do you have to have a degree in ESL education to teach ESL?

We Answered:

You don't have to do a degree in ESL. You can do a postgraduate university ESL course which is usually only 6 months full time. You can also do a certificate in ESL, and yes, you can get paid with it. The only thing is, the postgraduate is obviously better from an employer's perspective. If you're looking at teaching in Asia or something, it doesn't matter what you have, as long as it is an ESL qualification. If you're looking at teaching ESL in the states (or any English speaking country), postgrad or the actual degree in ESL is preferred - so basically anything at university level.
