There are basically 2 ways into primary teaching.1. (In my opinion the best for primary) You do a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) which takes 4 years. This type of course puts the stress on teaching techniques, classroom management, education law and good practice, etc. You do have to choose some specialised subjects and I would suggest opting for science subjects, physics, biology, etc., but along with these you will learn how to approach the teaching of English, Maths., and other curriculum subjects. The reason I suggest sciece as options is because questions asked by curious primary aged children are usually of a scientific nature, such as, for example, "What causes stitch?" "Why do we hiccup?" "How do my glasses work?" "Why do the wheels on some vehicles on tv films seem to be going backwards?" (I've had all these asked and millions more like them in my 40+ years in primary teaching.)
2. The alternative is to do a subject degree to gain a B.Sc. or a B.A., taking 3 years and then you would have to do a P.G.C.E. (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) before you would be allowed to teach.
Without a doubt, the best route for primary teaching is route 1; for secondary teaching it would be route 2 as you need a subject degree in order to teach at secondary schoo.

Not necessarily. I not 100% sure about the U.S but I know in the U.K you can do an undergraduate degree in whatever you like. And if you want too you can go a postgraduate degree called a PGCE (postgraduate certificate in education) and that enables you to be a teacher. Either of whatever subject your undergraduate was. So she could teach like Business studies in a high school or you can do a PGCE in primary studies.It is perfectly feasible loads of people do PGCE's to become teachers. It's just an easier way of getting into the field.
