what is the current and projected job climate for primary school teachers in the uk?We Answered:
You are certainly not to old to apply for a PGCE and I would think that with your qualifications you would easily gain a place to train for one. There are not enough males in primary education. I have taught in several schools in which I was the only male - I once had to share a toilet with nuns - and the more men who can be encouraged to enter teaching at this age level the better, specially bearing in mind that there are thousands of boys and girls for that matter) being brought up with no recognisable father figure in their lives.
Some men seem to think that there is an inherent danger in teaching in junior and/or infant schools. There is not. I've done it since 1960 - and still do supply teaching - and have been accused only once of something I did not do. A girl accused me of kicking her chair from under her. The rest of the class soon put the head right on that!! You are far more likely to have problems with older children, especially girls, who are far too street-wise for their own good.
And, believe me, the rewards from primary teaching (I am not referring to salaries here) are boundless and over many years I have had so much pleasure from my chosen profession.
My advice - GO FOR IT!!
