Meaning and Mitzvah:
Deepening Your Jewish Practice

You will be helped to look at your relationship to six mitzvot and the traditional guidelines for fulfilling them. We will do this in a special way, through a lens that takes into account the principles of changing times and personal needs that R'Zalman Schachter-Shalomi usually terms "psychohalakhah" and that this instructor calls "kavod lev halachah" - "honoring the heart of the tradition and of the individual."

Judaism and Focusing

1. Do You Always Have to Forgive?
We get such mixed messages in our various cultures about forgiveness. "Just do it" raises resistance and can increase damage to self. Focusing in the place where "forgive" lives inside of you as an irritating, intriguing, misunderstood idea can lead to a precious new state of connection to what happened and how to relate to it differently and with the potential for authentic healing.

2. The Kavannah Project: Focusing and Judaism
In this experiment, you will be guided in applying your Focusing skills to the partner study (in English, Hebrew will be available too) of a few lines of Torah, Talmud and Prayer. Participants will then share whether what you find in the texts and this unique study experience differs from the expectations you have of Judaism based on your upbringing.

Rabbi Joseph Gikatilla of the 13th century provided us a legacy of how to have mystical experiences through the process of Jewish prayer. He not only developed meditations that have remarkable effects on the human mind and spirit which you will taste during this workshop, but you will also learn and experience his Ladder of Jewish Prayer.

It explains how the morning prayer service is a carefully sequenced series of carefully designed nutrients for the human soul stream. Most of us were given the format and formulas of prayer but not shown how. This  workshop will especially focus on the energizing, healing and spiritual nutrients that are buried in every prayer and service.

Starting with a rapid self-assessment process that will help you consider your relationship to about sixty of the 613 mitzvot, we will then focus weekly on an in-depth study of mitzvot and how to expand their meaning in our lives. Explore how living a mitzvah-centered life and enacting mitzvot with the intention of experiencing a sacred state of consciousness can increase your experience of a life rich in meaning, satisfaction and connection. Half-day
workshop

Often poorly translated as "forgiveness" or "repentance," the Jewish spiritual practice most often associated with the High Holidays is known as "teshuvah". This practice of change and realignment of relationship is traditionally done in a climate of moral self re-evaluation and sense of being judged. Ironically, true personal change comes more from listening empathetically to one’s inner voices within an environment of safety and support, than being forced through beating up on oneself.

In this workshop, participants will first study teshuvah through classical Jewish text study, prayer, poetry and Jewish meditation based on the gentle teachings of the Kotsker Rebbe and other teachers of Jewish spiritual practice. Then, through interactive exercises based on Focusing technique and Gestalt methodology, participants will learn the skills needed to hear and honor those soft inner voices that Dr. Gene Gendlin the developer of Focusing technique calls "the voice of God." Finally, participants will identify relationships where healing may be possible, and prepare for this by practicing focusing technique in a way that facilitates interpersonal teshuvah.

August 14-20, 2000

No more snoozing through Torah portions about the sacrificial system. For too long, cynicism and criticism about these parshiot (Torah readings) and the Cohanim (priests) have blinded us to opportunities for growth and close study of these texts and related commentaries. Using hevruta (pair) study and bibliodrama, we will open up these powerful passages with participants. No blood will be shed.
