Dan Said:

As Director, how do I solve conflicts on an all volunteer Board for a parent co-op cultural summer school?

We Answered:

At first it sounded like more than one parent volunteered for the same position and I could help but when I clicked on it I became less sure of what you needed help with. I guess you don't mean conflicts with more than one person signing up for the same spot. Were you ever in 4-H? Use their format of, "The chair recognizes ____" and so on and, "All in favor . . . " and so forth.

NC Teachers Summer Pay?

We Answered:

typically in most schools you have someone that has already in place for those positions in the schools. i worked at a school in eastern nc and always wanted to work at the summer youth program sponsored by the county but every year the same people got those positions. some counties will stretch your 10 month salary for 12 months. you short yourself a little but get a check for the months that you are out. credit unions offer summer savings plans for teachers. for extra cash try to do some tutoring over the summer. advertise your services. you will be surprised how much you can make--you can pretty much set your own price. hope this helps.

If I gross $5000 in TN, for teaching summer school, given in two installments, what's a rough estimate of net?

We Answered:

SS/Med taxes will always be 7.65%. Last time I did payroll for TN, there was no state tax, so I hope that is still true for you.

For fed withholding, it depends on how your payroll department works. If they hold taxes based on supplemental income, the tax is withheld at 28%, for 35.65% total. If they annualize your pay and tax based on that, it will be quite a bit less, most likely less than 20%, probably a lot lower.

What are the highest paying jobs in the US public school system that allow you to have the summer off?

We Answered:

If that is your motivation for wanting to be a teacher, don't waste your time...you will be a lousy teacher, and the kids will be better off without you.

The worst teacher I ever had was one who used to groumble all the time that she only took the job to get summers off and how much she hated all of us kids...

Do yourself a favor and go into another line of work...some jobs are very liberal with time off, and you can make way more money!

Go do the research!

I've been offered 2 very different teaching positions, which one would you take?

We Answered:

Personally, I would take the alternative school. My reasoning why is, I have found that once you get into special education, it's nearly impossible to get out. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with teaching spec ed, but once you get actual classroom experience doing it, you'll always get that as the first question to any interview you go to from then on..."I notice you taught a year of special education....would you be interested in teaching it again? How about teaching our spec ed at our school?" Once you say no, the school starts frowning. I've had this happen several times before.
I've also been told by professors if you teach spec ed in a school, you will never be moved from it to a regular ed classroom. You would have to leave the school and go somewhere else to get a chance to move into a grade classroom.
