How can I teach ESL/TESOL to adults in the United States?

We Answered:

The requirements depend on where you want to teach. Colleges and universities are going to require at least an MA TESOL, if not PhD. Community colleges require an MA.

For 'adult schools' and private schools, requirements vary. Some will hire you if you have teaching experience and a degree, regardless of what the degree is in. Others want better creds.

I'd identify what kind of situation you want to teach in, and then talk to some teachers to see what kinds of degrees they have.

I would like to teach ESL in China. How important is to get CELTA certified vs. other certifications?

We Answered:

If you have a college degree, do not get the CELTA certification. The job they will place you in will not be good or good pay. It's easy to find a job on your own. (www.eslcafe.com, www.chinajob.com, www.anesl.com, etc.)

If you don't have a college degree, you probably will need some sort of certification, but their price is very high. You're better off spending the money on college. If you just want to get certified and go to China, you can take a course for closer to $500.

I'm a college graduate, and I found my first job in China in a matter of minutes using the internet.

Can anyone there help me with some lessons to teach ESL to gratuated university students?Or website to check?

We Answered:

I like to play ESL games with the students. It makes class fun and the best way to help someone learn a language is to motivate them to speak and think for themselves, rather than all the repetition. Most games can be adapted to increase the level of difficulty. This woman, Victoria W. posts new games regularly and you can subscribe to her postings so new games come directly to your mailbox.

What certifications do I need in order to teach ESL in Texas?

We Answered:

ESL is an endorsement area in Texas. As you are already certified, you would need approximately 4 courses and the appropriate licensure test. You could fit it in within a year if you have a college nearby which is approved by the state with the endorsement area and which offers the classes on a regular basis.
