Teach English in Santiago Chile?

We Answered:

You'll get paid squat; you'll have to approach this from a more humanitarian and life enrichment perspective. You'll gain a great deal of respect in the community of your choosing, and you're setting a very positive course for the rest of your life.

I'm not a teacher by trade, but have taken on a light responsibility of teaching English to a young man from Indonesia ( I know little about that language ). I'm learning so much in the process that I'm also considering getting the proper certification to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) here in Texas.

If you get the financial aid or work your butt off for the $1500, do it. Beware of scams that will you no real accreditation, however, so that your paperwork will be in order.

When going to teach English in Santiago, Chile, what schools are the best, and how do I contact them?

We Answered:

Hi
I have yet to work in South America as a teacher, but I have been an EFL teacher for about 8 years in Asia. I found one website that has a little outdated info for you: http://www.cactustefl.com/jobs/TEFL/chil…
but gives you a little more English teaching profile. For finding work try http://eslcafe.com, http://www.transitionsabroad.com/listing… and http://www.eslbase.com/jobs/
The British guardian also put out an interesting article for Chile in 2002.

One word of advice though. Some Chile recruiters may actually try to charge you to find a job. Approach them with extreme caution.

Good luck

What qualifications do I need to teach English in Argentina/Chile?

We Answered:

Hi...I def. admire you for this and am very jealous. I am a teacher as well and actually have family in Argentina and have looked into doing this myself. I don't know if you are interested in doing this as a volunteer type trip or a paying teacher position but...there are a ton of volunteer abroad programs where you can teach English to the Natives. You do have to pay for your flight and the program but they usually set you up with a host family, meals and even excursions to go on. There are a ton of programs I found just browsing the internet. I just went to google and typed in volunteer abroad. You will find so many options. It does take some searching though since some only offer programs in certain countries. But I think it is a great opportunity and if I was more financially stable right now I would definitely do it myself. So I hope this helps and feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions. I also speak Spanish so if you have any translation questions don't hesitate to ask:)
buena suerte...hope this helps
