Teach in Tibet, HELP!!?

We Answered:

Teaching English in Tibet is not illegal. However, there is not as much demand for English teachers there as there is elsewhere. Plus, the government is very selective about who actually works in Tibet and prefers to go through reputable, well-known organizations who screen teachers well.

I'd do an internet search on "teach English in Tibet" and go from there. I know the English Language Institute of China (ELIC) has two teachers in Tibet, so you could check with them (www.elic.org). However, whenever I've met ELIC teachers, they've all said they could only request a certain region to be assigned and not a specific location. Or, if they requested a location, they weren't guaranteed they would get that location.

Another option would be to apply to teach in Chengdu or Xining. They both have large Tibetan populations and both are starting points for trips into Tibet. By starting in one of these cities, you also start to develop a network that could help you be placed in Tibet later on.

Good luck!

PS: In reference to the poster who said that Chinese language skills are required for English teachers in China . . . this is not true. It helps, trust me, it helps, but it is not required. Cantonese is not required to teach in southern China; Amdo (Tibetan) is not required to teach in Tibet. Since schools are hiring teachers to teach English, they are not concerned about the teacher having local language skills.

How to get travel money for teaching in Tibet?

We Answered:

I honestly don't know the costs of your placement.

Such volunteering in China mostly involves someone finding you a placement and then you pay for for rent and a fee for it being set up.

As for fund raising, parents are mostly the first choice...

Other than that funding raising with sponsor walks, selling unwanted stuff.

As for others saying that summer school teaching or not being in Tibet that is not true. Below is an examples of Tibet school asking for foreign volunteering on a 1-4 week basis. However due to the 2008 unrest their maybe extra regulations in place now.
