Has anyone ever taught english abroad in Turkey? We Answered:
I have. Finding English teaching jobs is like shooting fish in a barrel--however finding worthwhile ones are a bit tougher. If you have a BA/MA in education, you can expect to get a job at one of the private universities or top high schools paying $3000/month, plus housing and benefits. On the other end of the scale, private-course dumps like English Time, Dilko or British English will hire anyone off the street who speaks English as a native language. There, you can expect to make something around 1500 YTL/month, with no benefits and work permits. Plus, those places are infamous for not paying on time--or at all.
From what I've heard, adults are more pleasant to teach. Private kolejs (K-12 schools) often have really bratty kids--as they're from a higher socio-economic class in a society that tends toward showy wealth, they're not used to being told "no"--and the administration will side with a second-grader over you as they are "paying customers" to whom you are simply providing a service. One of my fourth-graders came up to me and said to me in Turkish, "I have more money than you!" (?!) This doesn't apply to the more elite schools, however.
Feel free to send me a private message if you want.

What are some volunteer opportunities in Turkey that have a stipend or provide room and board? We Answered:
English teaching jobs in Turkey is a competitive area. Small time jobs are filled by English speaking locals. For being a professional English teacher, you seem to have to take a test, I don't remember which. As for volunteer camps, honestly, I didn't hear of any that caters to foreigners. Having said that, foreigners do come to Turkey to work in the tourism industry, i.e. in tourism agencies, shops and bars, etc.

what certificates do i need to hold in order to teach English as a second language in Turkey? We Answered:
It is a legal requirement for EFL teachers in Turkey to hold a university degree and TEFL Cert. (CELTA or equivalent). There are jobs available in language schools and some may be prepared to employ teachers without the above qualifications but it is not recommended.
In private or state schools there is sometimes a need to have studied either English at university level or to hold a PGCE or B.Ed.
In universities they may well demand an M.A. or DELTA (English language teaching diploma).
You will need to supply originals of all degrees/certificates in order to be approved by the Ministry of Education and to get a work visa and residence permit.
Unlike what an above answer states, Istanbul is the city with the most teaching opportunities for foreigners and the most European outlook. Ankara may be the capital but Istanbul is the largest and most progressive city. Izmir is also worth a look.

Teaching English in Turkey, Advice please? We Answered:
are you thinking of going to teach in turkey in few years, after taking all your qualifications and finished uni and english masters don't u?i wish you good luck!
first of all, to go to a foreign country and teach english, you need to have a basic level of their native language, remember u are there to teach them english so they don't know it yet! u need to learn along with children, and children along with you.
I also think u will be redirected to some courses in turkey, to study their own curriculum ( programme of teaching in turkey), then you will be sent to some training in schools and after a while u can apply for a position. This process might take a while, depending on their necessities and your progress of course.
Just check online to see if you are eligible to work in there, and be ready for oncoming rules & laws in next few years.
Good luck!
