What is the best way to teach English through activities?

good suggestion by earlier poster - relating it to real life, making it relevant.
this can also be done through role-playing. think of everyday situations & places & assign roles/characters to the students. eg. breakfast time at home with a family of 4, getting late to school,... you can do it in small groups or divide the class into groups & let each group present their version or each group can be given different scenarios.
you may have to assist them initially with the dialogues, etc. but soon they'll catch on ...

you could try spoken word games to bring in some more enjoyment or as a 'break' from more serious learning. this will make them more uninhibited. some games - I spy, I went shopping , telephone or chinese whispers, tongue-twisters, Botticelli , buzz, & so on. [you may find these on the net. or if you want details, email me]

make it a practice that every day one child has to pretend to be some famous personality [past or present] or even any literary or movie character. and s/he will have to speak about that personality or character for a few minutes. you may or may not allow them to use a written text.

divide the class into groups/ rows. each group will build a story using cue cards distributed to each child. you can give the groups similar words/phrases/situations or different ones. give them some time to create a story - humorous, drama, play, ... prize to the best group. they may even enact it or read it out loud, with each member participating.

hope these generate even better ideas
all the very best & have fun :-))

How to teach English to an adult student?

We Answered:

Hi Nani,

If you think about it, 'how do little children learn English.'
Answer: For some it may take a year or more before they speak and usually they say one or two words to begin with. They listen and observe and then one day, the words tumble out especially where food is concerned.

Parents then encourage them by saying a short sentence using the words the child has spoken. If there are older siblings, then they often will say the sentence the way it should be spoken and the child learns. Parents and siblings often correct the way the child speaks a sentence - grammar doesn't get a mention.

Most children learn at their own pace and when you consider that fact, so will adults who do not have the language skills to begin with.

Forget the grammar and simply focus on the correct way to speak a sentence. I wouldn't even mention grammar and I taught TEFL over many years.

Use children's books, cereal packets and build a series of questions around say a Kellogg's Cereal package.

Example: Would you like some Kellogg's Cornflakes for breakfast? Write the sentence and finger each word while the adult looks at the package. Use other packet products and remember what it is that someone new to a language needs to learn - the basic stuff.

You could of course Google - 'Teaching English Best Practice' and see what that turns up. Something I just thought about.

Children's Books is the way to go.

What is the best way to teach English as a second language to older age groups?

We Answered:

Well teaching with pictures and seeing the Korean word alongside the English word and constantly talking in English as well as making them tapes. This might help... repetition and reinforcement. You could easily make powerpoint presentations of common phrases with pics and words used a lot.

Applying to teach English in a foreign country can i bring my dog?

We Answered:

If you are renting your own place I don't see why you can't take your dog. You need to find out the country's laws in bringing animals and how long he or she will be quarrantined.
