Blue, yellow and green recycling bins. What should go in which bin so kids will remember it easier?

We Answered:

My husband and I run our city recycling center. We have Girl Scout troops that help us, and we put pictures of the items to be recycled (glass, plastic, etc.) on our bins so the Girl Scouts know what goes where.

I use my computer's printer to make a page with the word on it "Plastic", then paste a photo of a plastic bottle. Then I print out the page and tape it to the proper bin.

Thank you for recycling! This will assure that your grandchildren aren't knee-deep in landfills.

Fundraising/ involvement ideas for recycling bins at High school? anyone?

We Answered:

You're amazing. Really. To see a high school student taking these steps is heartwarming.

For you fundraising ideas, you might try to get some of the musicians in your school to throw a Sustainability Benefit. Look to LiveEarth as an example of what can be done:

www.liveearth.org

These concerts connected over 1/3 of the world's population over a period of 24 hours, and the recycling team that supported these shows had an average of 92% waste stream diversion from landfills.

Check with this company for inspiration/advice. The President and VP are friends of mine, and they would love to know that younger generations are taking up the torch.

what are good idea's to teach kids about Recycling and invierment?

We Answered:

One good way is to say "environment", no matter your pronunciation.

You could set up a cage on the playground and have kids bring in recyclable things for a week to throw in the cage. That is visual proof of how much recyclable material we generate.

A way to get kids into recycling?

We Answered:

First of all, show them pictures of landfills, big, disgusting landfills. Then, show them how by not recycling, or even littering, things can just drift all over and destroy plants, animals, and the environment. Tell them also, because this is true, that it we don't recycle we'd be living in garbage because we have SO MUCH! Sometimes by taking the sudden shocker route, you get a lot more attention, memories, and people who'll take action. You could even hold a contest or something to get kids interested, like, whoever's class recycles the most for the whole year, will get a prize. That turns a light on in kid's minds, PRIZE. They LOVE that. Now it's a competition to see who can do the best job. Besides, by also not telling them what it is, you get a whole year to figure it out. Hope this helps!
