How do I teach my kids to respect other religions/ideas while imparting my faith to them?We Answered:
I'm Jewish and I'm going to take a big leap here and say I'll bet most Jewish folk are going to know how to answer this with greater ease as this is how most Jewish parents raise our children. It isn't a matter of having respect for other beliefs, some of which may demonize your own or be seen as personally offensive or bizarre, it is more a matter of having respect for the right of other human beings to choose their own path and belief.
I try to impart to my child that if we hope and expect others to respect us, to honor our right to worship God in the manner we choose, then we should be able and willing to reciprocate that same level of respect to the rights of others.
And as has been mentioned already, example is the best teacher. In Judaism, we see our role as living in Tikkun Olam ( repair of the world) this means we are partners with God and our fellow man to try to fix the wrongs of the world while we enjoy the fruits and blessings of it. In so doing, we also enable our children to witness us working side by side with others whose beliefs may differ.
I'm rather known for saying in Religion chat rooms in Yahoo over the years the following:
I raise my child as my parents raised me, to be respectful and tolerant of the right of individuals and groups to have their own unadulterated culture, customs and beliefs. My tolerance extends to the point where the expression of those beliefs violate certain standards of behaviors: If they attempt to violate another’s civil rights, seek to incite harm to anyone, willfully deceive another or misrepresent the beliefs of others then my tolerance ceases.

How do you teach your kids self respect? We Answered:
wow, you really impressed me! not only that you are questioning this, but also trying to find a way to teach this concept to your future kids!! I wish every one of us took your path.. we would not have any criminals in our societies, I think.. how about THAT?ok now my answer. teaching self respect is mostly thru modelling it to your kids. So think of a mother who is slightly overweight, looks at herself in the mirror all day long, and mumbles: god i hate my body! kids hear this and take it to heart. Love yourself first, accept who you are: overweight, underweight, thin hair, too much hair, whatever it may be.. and yes self respect starts with self image. I had my self respect directly from my mom. And I'm now raising a daughter. We eat together, we look in the mirror together, make faces, comb our hair, and have fun. So it's not about criticizing yourself in the mirror, but it's about having fun and laughing at your huge zit on your freckled face!!
again, by questioning all of this, I think you've already managed to master this self respect concept by 70% so now work on your shortcomings, as we ALL do.. every day..

What resources would i need to teach my boy, respect? We Answered:
Really you would require a role model. Imitation works a lot better than reading or talk.Heidi Said:
Why don't more parents teach their kids respect for animals? We Answered:
Unfortunately, most children learn their respect, or the lack there of from their parents.I don't have a solution for you. Just some suggestions. If the kittens are so afraid of people, and it seems they are, it might be best to try to re-enforce their shelter in some way to prevent the kind of behavior the girls gave them.
If all else fails, you may have to call animal control. I know this is something the people in the complex don't want to do or they would have already done it.
animals are like people, you have to earn their trust.
Maybe the people in the complex could take turns watching over the den to make sure the girls don't repeat their behavior.
I am so sorry I don't have better suggestions. It's just a sad situation.

How can I teach my kids to respect adults? We Answered:
It starts with them respecting you. My experience has been that if you set up rules and clearly define the peramiters and consequences, and STICK TO IT, then the respect will follow.
