where does the silly notion that its a parents responsibility to teach kids about sex&relatioships when few do

We Answered:

If we had sex ed teachers, it would be their responsibility to teach sex ed. But we don't. We have maths teachers, who should teach maths, French teachers to teach French and so on. Reproduction fits into the subject of biology, so this gets taught. Relationship advice can't really be taught, only learnt through experience. Personally I believe the people you learn best from are your parents, and that they should teach you what they can. Schools are important for learning social interaction, and because no one can be an expert at everything.
[EDIT] Yes, it would be a little embarassing, but I'd have preferred to hear it from my parents than from my creepy 50-something yr old form teacher. I completely ignored the sex ed teaching I got in school because I didn't feel it was relevant to me. Later on, when I decided it might be useful to know, I found out for myself. If my parents had told me, I think I would have at least appreciated that what they were saying was probably important.

Does having pets teach kids responsibility?

We Answered:

*Parents* teach kids responsibility. They can offer opportunities like having pets to help them teach it. But the truth is, it is up to the parents to do. I had neighbors who would let their 11 year old daughter adopt a kitten from a feral family that hung around our homes, then not bother to get the kitten fixed. Inevitably, the kitten would grow up to be a cat, start spraying, get put outside the house, then spend days roaming the neighborhood, coming home torn up from fights. This would worry the girl. One time she and I got her parents to agree to pay for half of the cost of neutering the cat, and I would pay her to do chores at my place so she could earn the other half. They agreed, but never followed through. And she would get upset all over again, when the cat decided not to come home at all. Then she would adopt another kitten, and the same thing would happen again. They were teaching her that pets are disposable. It really made me sad.

How do we teach kids fiscal responsibility?

We Answered:

A basic economics survey-type class should suffice. Most of the time you can just go down a list of living expenses, according to them (rent, car, insurance, cell phone plan, bills), then add up a full time, $10/hr job, after taxes. When they see the discrepancy-- before they've even spent a cent on fun and entertainment-- they can usually have good conversations after.

Another classroom experiment I've tried is using money (faux) in the classroom and regarding student life and scholarship to a job. Pay them for good performance, charge them rent for their desk, penalize them for tardiness, 'fire' them for disruptive behavior.

Eventually, when they get at least some real world context, it starts to click.

How do you teach financial responsibility lessons ?

We Answered:

With our kids, we had them work at home and save for special things they wanted. They earned an allowance, and had to save most of it.
When my son got his first job - he saved most of his money. At 17, he purchased his own car.
All this from the boy who had to save to buy his $50 Batman Batcave in 1st grade.
My daughter saved to buy an American Girl Doll when she was little. She is now applying at a few places for her first job and is excited to earn/manage her own money. They appreciated the lessons learned early on.
