education needed for teaching art?

We Answered:

If she wants to teach in any public school system, in any state no matter the subject, she will need to complete her four year degree and have a teaching certification. For subject specific such as art, she will most likely have to take the area of interest/subject specific test usually.

I would recommend getting the degree in education w/ emphasis of certification and state test prep. It's general with just about every state and required. Once she completes it, she needs to take the subject testing as well to teach art. It gets tricky on requirements if you don't know what grade level you plan on teaching yet, primary/elementary or secondary, etc.

Art schools are great but she will have to obtain that teaching cert. before she can teach. And, most likely pass the state teachers exam. in PA it's called the PRAXIS exam. They also have the ACT 48 cert,

I can't speak for your state, but the best thing to do is research the universities and work towards that degree in ed. Here is the DOE website, good luck to you guys.

Art Education project, teaching art to children with Autism...?

We Answered:

The difficulty with the assignment is that children with autism fall along a huge spectrum of functioning so it kind of depends on the levels of the students. It also depends what the objective is for the activity. Overall to account for a large range of students I would try either something exploratory in terms of letting them experiment with different mediums and do their own thing and decide maybe what their favorite medium is (paint, pastels, pencil etc.). Apart from that children with autism tend to have some deficits in language and tend to be very concrete thinkers or interpreters, often times they may also be perfectionists and may have find motor difficulties. Keep it positive an open so that a large range of products or outcomes would be considered successful.

Gerald Said:

what is the best teaching technique and the best learning style for ART education?

We Answered:

You can never say there is one best style for everyone as everyone learns differently. Your best bet in teaching styles is to model the assignment. The best learning style overall in art is of course kinesthetic or hands on.

What is the qualitative approach of teaching by Lowenfeld (in art education)?

No. 273 | Exploring the Legends: Guideposts to the Future
Sylvia K. Corwin, Editor

In the history of U.S. art education, the era that followed World War II was also an age of heroes. What made the individuals celebrated in this volume into the legends that they have become? There were four leading ideas or planks that in many respects formed the platform that characterized art education after the war. Ziegfeld's goal of promoting art in daily living. This is the view that art is a part of the daily life of the individual, that art belongs to the common man, the man-in-the-street, that it is not the exclusive province of social or intellectual elites. He believed that art education should help shape a democratic art for a democratic society. Lowenfeld's goal of cultivating the child's expressive impulses through art education, thus to cultivate psychological health, freedom, and democracy. Another is the belief that art education does not exist to create artists, but well adjusted individuals. Art is less a body of subject matter than a developmental activity. In this regard Lowenfeld's instrumental use of art was compatible with Ziegfeld's. D'Amico's goal of cultivating art within art education, especially modern art. Modern art is desirable in art education not only because it values originality in expression but also because in encouraging creativeness it is a socially progressive influence in all aspects of society. Arnheim's goal of cultivating the cognitive abilities of individuals through the arts because they are principally cognitive endeavors. Art education is primarily concerned with understanding and thinking in the various media comprising the visual arts.
