I am nervous about meeting my student teaching classes - any advice for me?We Answered:
Being that you're just a student teacher, I'd take the advice from your cohort teacher. Start by introducing yourself. I am not sure if you want to say to Middle School students that you are a student teacher. If you do, be ready to deal with students that may take advantage that you are new.Avoid being friendly. Be supportive but firm. Teachers that seem friendly to students are experienced and already gain the respect from students. At first, it is good enough for students to listen to you. If there's one area you'd be working on first, that would be classroom management.
Take it simple and slow at first. If you're expected to run a lesson, start a simple one. Write up a lesson plan with clear objectives. You may want to write every detail, such as what you're going to say, questions you're going to ask, and probable answers. Write out every step of the way.
It will seem tedious to write out such a detail plan. Until you've gain enough experience and confidence, it is easier to have everything written down to follow.
Overall, you'll find that many of the students are eager to learn. You will always have those few that are the difficult ones. Just be patient and be ready for anything.
Best of luck!

With Teach for America do you actually teach classes by yourself or do you do work as a teaching assistent? We Answered:
The volunteers in Teach for America teach the classes by themselves in most cases. There are good things about this program and things which are slightly problemmatic (in my opinion). These teachers are fairly successful compared to others in the schools where they are located but you should understand that many of those working in the schools where they are located are not qualified teachers either. Therefore, they do better than people pulled in off the street but not necessarily better than a trained teacher. I applaud the intention but see it as a bit of a band-aid. I know that in some instances, they are placed in situations where they really are not prepared for the specialized needs of some of their students. Of course, an underprepared person with a good attitude and a good education is better than an unprepared person without even a good attitude or education.
In an ideal world, we would have enough highly qualified teachers that this program would not be needed. Of course, America actually does have enough highly qualifed teachers but many of them leave the profession in the first five years and/or refuse to work in some of the schools where Teach for America teachers are placed ... Those are problems that this program can't fix.

What do I need to start teaching Business classes? We Answered:
There aren't a lot of high schools which offer marketing classes, I'm afraid. Accounting and Economics are pretty common, but not Marketing. If you were to get an MBA you could teach part time at a community college, but probably not until you had a few years of professional experience as well, since Marketing is a particularly professional subject matter and you would lack credibility unless you had done it for a living. If you really want to do this full time, you might think about going on for a Ph.D. You would probably be expected to do research, not just teaching, but there are great opportunities right now for marketing professors.

How would you market a class teaching selling on eBay?We Answered:
Steve,If your planing on asking a fee to take your class than you will have to gear your eBay class towards a niche market that is not being tapped into, such as the senior citizens market. More and more seniors are getting onto the net everyday and senior citizens have tons of stuff laying around their house that could be sold on eBay, so you could market your class on teaching seniors how to clean out the junk in their house for cash on eBay. Now the key to success with this idea is how your going to advertiser you eBay class to seniors, well one way is to pass out flyer's on bingo nights at churches as many seniors like to play bingo.
I hope this helps!

What type of classes should you take if you are a 16 and interested in interior design? We Answered:
Take Art (a must), graphic design (sometimes an ROTC course), & Home Economics. If they offer Art History, Psychology, writing...take them.
These classes may not seem directly related but here's why:
Art History: Learn about color pairings, motifs, what has been considered attractive historically.
Psych: How the mind works, how to determine what people like, how they are affected by colors and concepts.
Writing: You may have to write a book about your design one day!
Good ID's know color, arrangement, individual tastes, themes and concepts, budgeting, sewing (!), crafts, shopping for home furnishings and accessories, etc.
Start practicing shopping for things you wouldn't buy, like furniture and home decor at malls, target, department stores, fabric stores & home depot. Learn about fabric names (corderoy, jacquard, toile, damask), woods (oak, maple, mahogany) and furniture styles (mission, federal). Learn about real estate and types of homes from the newspaper and magazines (craftsman, tudor, plantation) because homeowners often like to match their decor to the style of their home.
Buy some furniture from a thrift shop and learn how to refinish the wood and metal. Practice sewing curtains and pillows from scrap fabric.
Study Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of bringing good energy with proper placement of home furnishings.
Good luck!
