what is the relevance and use of my professional practice in teaching and learning?

We Answered:

Some things that will help you include:

1. Philosophy of education - Write a brief statement and be able to articulate it.

2. Classroom management plan - It should be based on your philosophy of education and you should have some understanding of the research done in support of it. Knowing how you're going to manage your class is crucial to having a successful class. How will you physically organize the class, how will manage behavior, how do you keep a positive classroom environment? etc.

4. Methods/Instruction - How will you teach? What content will you teach and why? How do you plan to motivate your students? How will you keep them engaged in learning?

5. Lesson Plans - You should prepare a couple of strong lesson plans that integrate instructional objectives, state and national standards for the visual arts:

National Standards for Visual Arts Grades 9-12 (scroll down to bottom for the "Visual Arts"): http://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/teach…

Search Tool for State Standards: http://www.education-world.com/standards…

6. How will you assess and evaluate learning? Tests, portfolios, grades, rubrics, etc.

7. You will probably be asked about at least one if not all of the following (it depends on where you live): How will you integrate technology, develop curriculum for a multicultural, language-diverse classroom, address learning disabilities, mainstreaming/inclusion, accomodate different learning styles (Linguistic, Logical-mathematical, Spatial, Bodily-kinesthetic, Musical, Naturalistic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal), etc.

Sorry if this seems overwhelming. These are just some of the things I learned while studying for a teaching credential in visual arts. If you have some more questions, write them in the comment area and I will try to answer them for you. Good Luck!

What kinds of jobs in visual arts are there?

We Answered:

Yes all of those can be visual art jobs but some are very hard to get such as graphic design and animation. Marketing and business art can also be good jobs. It really depend on the type of art you have experience in. :)

Graphic design vs teaching?

We Answered:

If the procedure to become a teacher in your state involves majoring in teaching, you could certainly major in teaching and minor in graphic design. You might need a double minor, which is very easy to do, if your state does not accept graphic design as a minor for teachers. (In some states, such as California, a prospective teacher does not major in teaching or education, but takes a fifth year of college to earn a teaching credential.)

The major problem with graphic design is that finding full-time work in it is virtually impossible. It is not a dependable means of supporting yourself. I also hate getting up early, but arose by
seven a.m. every workday for over twenty years. Adults, just like teens, have to do some things they hate.

Most teachers make much more money in a year than most graphic designers. Teachers also receive health insurance and pension benefits. Graphic design is a field in which about 10% of the people make about 90% of the money.

You could easily do graphic design as a side job if you were a teacher, if you could find graphic design work. Most graphic design work is part-time as people cannot support themselves at it full- time.

It is more likely that you will have to move further to get a graphic design job, as opposed to graphic design side jobs. Full-time graphic design jobs are concentrated in only a few cities.

Unless you live in a very isolated location, you should be able to find a teaching job in your local area, especially if you are willing to start out in a grade other then fifth. Most teachers start in the grade to which they are assigned and move to their grade of choice when they have seniority.

You also will probably have to move to go to college if you live in an area which is so isolated that there are no teaching jobs available. Once you have finished college, you may feel differently about moving.

You are very intelligent to have analyzed this question so well. I hope I have provided helpful information. Best wishes.
