Methods for Teaching Mathematics to Elementary-aged Children: Every Day Math?We Answered:
You are correct. The use of calculators should be put off until the student is in Intermediate Algebra. Personally, I didn't use a calculator until college. The best way to teach basic math is through drills. The more they learn to do in their heads the better off they are.

In Illinois, how do I get my Secondary teaching certificate, if I already have my Elementary cert?We Answered:
Contact your local, county or state superintendent of schools. The state certification office will have to evaluate your transcripts to tell you what you will need. Count on some additional coursework. Why not stay with middle school? Those kids need good and special kinds of people to work with them.

How do you get a Teaching Certificate after a BA?We Answered:
There are a couple of options that you can pursue. Most states have a license option called "lateral entry" whereby career changers can get a temporary teaching license and teach while taking courses to get the education courses you need for permanent licensure. Advantage: You don't have separate student teaching, can work while you get the courses you need. Some places offer summer coursework to get you the knowledge you need (see below). Disadvantages: You have to be hired by a school district before you can apply for a lateral entry license in most states; your program of study isn't as organized as if you went to an organized program. There are also programs that offer you teaching training and student teaching as part of a masters degree program. Commonly referred to as Masters of Teaching degrees (MAT) they offer a more coordinated approach to learning, embedded student teaching, and a masters degree license (which means a higher salary).
Check out the resources below and find some additional sources in your state. Go to your state's Department of Education (or Department of Public Instruction or whatever its called in your state) and look up alternative licensure on the search feature for more details. Your closest state college or university probably offers one or more of these programs, so look up their education department and see.
Best of luck to you! We need good teachers!!!
