What State is good to practice elementary teaching?

We Answered:

I have moved several times. Pick a place that you would like to live and work in.

Some of the best teaching salaries are in New York City and other such expensive places. Chicago city schools offers good salaries, however you have to live in city limits, therefore salary is not so good.

Pick a region you want to live in and explore from there. Example: if you want to live in the Great White North (MN, SD, ND, WI, MI, MT, ID) you will quickly find out that moving will usually involve taking another class or two. In MN you will need to take two classes, assuming that your degree is accepted. If you want to move to CA you will want two full years of experience in your certification. Find the region and explore the internet.

What are the minimum requirements to teach in an American elementary school?

I have a friend who is from the Philipines and his greatest difficulty is finding a school who will give him his work visa. Not all districts are equipt to do that.

You have to prove your eligibility to work in the U.S. meaning you will have to have a work permit or a green card. You will also have to have a finger print clearance card to prove you don't have a criminal record. You have to take a teacher competency test in Elementary Education and in your subject matter. (English, Math, Social Studies, etc.) You will also have to acquire a social security card and obtain a certificate. We Americans also have to take a State History course about the State we become certified in. I suspect you will have to take some courses from an American university in the State you want to teach in on both American history and civics as well as State history and civics. Some states require you to take at least 24 college credits from a University in their state. Some states only require 9 and some don't require any.

In the U.S. there are a lot of steps to becoming what our national government calls "Highly Qualified". If a district needs you enough, they will help you to get all the steps accomplished. If you are competing with others part of the qualifying stage is to prove you can jump through all these procedures on your own.

I think you should chose your state and district carefully. Do some research on line. Google which states have the hardest requirements and which have the easiest. For example ask google, "Arizona (Or the state you want to research) Department of Education and click on Arizona teaching requirements. you will also want to google immigration and the process for getting your green card. That in itself is quite difficult these days since 9/11. We are making life quite difficult for foreigners.

Good for you for wanting to help. We can use it!

(By the Way, in the U.S. charter schools are increasingly popular and one in Tucson, Arizona is called Sonoran Science Academy and is run by Turkish people. I feel sure they are very familiar with obtaining work permits for their teachers. You should google school like that as they have very high academic standards, have classes for kindergarten to 12th grade and excel in math and science. They have students and teachers from all nationalities. Google that charter school. They are opening a new school in Tucson and have all positions open for next year. You must have a Master's degree to teach there as they hire top quality teachers to produce top quality students.)
