I will be teaching ESL soon to a bunch of adults, I must find activities to make them talk, any ideas?

We Answered:

Photocopy the singles colomn from the newspaper. It's great to learn how to describe someone physically . I suppose if they are second semester though they'll already be able to do that. Oh well its a suggestion anyway!

Need fun lesson plans or activities for ESL student.?

We Answered:

You'll need to plan activies that are not only fun, but functional as well. I worked with a Russian ESOL student last year.
This website offers a lot of info and focuses on the Spanish language -
http://www.colorincolorado.org/educators…

Also, if you work for a school district or are employed by one, they have the responsiblilty to supply you with ESL books. But theres never any promise when those will come in...

If you want to search on your own for more info, try searching not only ESL, but ESOL as well.

I teach an intermediate ESL class, I will show them a movie any ideas for activities?

We Answered:

Depends on their level of English. Try concept checking, like play a scene or a conversation and ask them about the main problem. Ask them about what time, what place etc.
Prepare worksheets where you could have those questions written down before hand.
Or create a movie quizz.

Type up one of the conversations and get them to act it out.

Elicit vocabulary from them and get them to put it in sentences.

I must say, watching a whole movie is quite ong and boring. I recommend a small part of the movie, unless of course it's a short movie.

Good luck!

Oh for an intermediate conversation class the posibilities are endless. A good book to trust is Headway Intermediate. It has endless activities on conversations and it also combines it with other skills.

I like to get my students to stand up and move around. Pair work is good to start as it will allow the shy ones to open up. Group work is more suitable for larger and more confident groups.

Elicit from them in the beginning. Ask them questions, get them to give you information. Then demonstrate. Either by making them listen to a taped conversation or get two volunteers to have a go infront of the class. Then get them to copy.

My personal favourite is 'Speed dating' created by me. Haha. I love it. I just get them to sit infront of each other on a long table and get them to find out as many information as possible about any topic I choose. You can combine this with grammar by saying "Ask your partner where they travvelled to last year and what they have done".
Here you are using the past simple and the present perfect.

For a more spesific answer to what you asked regarding the video. Number the movie chapters and decide what you will do with each one. Stop the movie after each chapter and have a quiz session or a pre made list of questions that they could discuss in groups or pairs. Or make it a competetion and give them a different set of quesions each.
Or get each pair to think of a scenario that will complete the scene. "What do you think will/should happen next" Here you are also pracctising grammar as well as general speaking.

A more fun thing to do is get them to give their own ending to the movie. So you can show them almost the whole movie but stop near the resolution part. They can discuss a suitable ending. The best ending is the winner etc.

Your top google search words should be: ESL intermediate conversation/speaking activities.

My fave websites are http://www.learnenglish.org.uk/ and http://www.citycol.com/esol/index.htm

All the best and have fun!

Do you have any good reading activities ideas?

We Answered:

Make a comic book to summarize and restate the story.

Write a letter to a character in the book.

Make up a different ending to the story.

Have the students act out a scene.

Make flashcards of the vocabulary words in the story. Or writh the words on one index card and the definitions on another. Then play Memory or Go Fish.

Have your students make a mini-quiz about their reading. Then have them switch and take their classmates' quizzes.

Let them listen to a book on tape as they follow along. Or have them make their own. Add sound effects.

Give them a ball or some clay to play with as they read. Helps the kinesthetic learners.

Try and ask some text-to-self questions to foster interest in the story and the characters.

Hope those help. Good luck with student teaching!
