Teaching ESL in China?We Answered:
First off, I think some training would be very useful to you. Teaching English isn't just a matter of standing in front of the class telling them about yourself. The children will get bored and start playing up.So if you can't afford to take a TEFL certificate then at least get some introductory books to learn about the basics of the subject.
You need to find out who the students are: their age, level, background and interests. Then you need to see what the previous teacher was working on. Also what books the school uses, the curriculum they follow and so on.
And, by the way, you shouldn't rely on a translator. The point about teaching English is that it should all be done in English so the students get the maximum exposure to the new language.
For an idea of a "typical" first lesson, see the link below. You'll see it's all about choosing the right target for the lesson and preparing activities and exercises to focus on that target. The next lesson chooses another target; and all the targets together make up the syllabus.

Can children accompany TESOL/ESL teachers on overseas assignments? We Answered:
It depends on the host/sending agency. It's not usually a problem in China, but may be in Japan due to their small houses and high cost of living. I don't know about other countries.I've known several foreign teachers in China who brought their children with them. I used to have a neighbor who brought her husband and two children with her when she taught over the summer vacation, and there was a teacher one of the high schools in my home province who had an adult son who lived with her.

How much demand is there for ESL instruction for adults? We Answered:
I taught ESL in public schools for a year, then went to Taiwan and taught English there with various ages. There are jobs teaching English to adults in the U.S. Many more overseas. Lots of companies want to train their employees in English. I worked for some of these companies in Taiwan.
Having a master's degree gives you a leg up on the competition. Education is always worthwhile.
College students might be another option for you. They are good to teach- motivated and make lots of progress and are smart.
Best wishes to you.
