What are some interesting methods for teaching ESL?

We Answered:

I've found classroom games are the best way to teach my ESL kids spelling. There are a ton of good games, both competitive and non-competitive, and some teachers and I have put together a database over at http://www.taiwanenglish.com/games.php

Hope that helps!

Are there any really good books that deal with ESL teaching methods?

We Answered:

yes, you can try the TKT from Cambridge (Teaching Knowledge Test) not only does it give you some great insight, it also prepares you for a certification on TKT.
Jeremy Harmer has a great book too... The Practice of English language Teaching (Longman).
and there is
A Course in Language teaching by Penny Ur (Cambridge)
You can look for more resources on the ESL page

Would you attend an ESL school that incorporates athletics into the daily schedule?

We Answered:

I'm not from Japan, but I think if you have noticed success AND your method actually makes the students more enthusiastic about learning English, then you should continue doing it! If the students are not complaining, then it looks like it has been working well for you and them!

High school ESL tutoring?

We Answered:

If you want to make a career out of teaching ESL you should start with Scott Thornbury's "About Language". He has also written a few other books about teaching and they are all quite good. In the reference section of each chapter there are also lists of other books that you might want to read.

If you are only interested in helping your friend then you could try to get a textbook like "American Headway" and work through it with him. Better even would be to allow him to read books that he selects himself, regardless of the level, and just go over some of the grammar points and vocabulary in the books after he read them. Don't do it as he reads as there are certain sub skills like ignoring words you don't know and guessing from context that can only be practiced if it isn't immediately explained.
You could also seach online for articles on topics of interest to your friend. If he likes poker for example, just search magazine + poker in google and print some articles for him to read. For ESL students, both form and function are important aspects of grammar so don't try to over teach either of them but make sure he is aware of both. It would be a lot easier for you though if you had a textbook with sound methodology to work from which is why I suggested looking at Headway or any other book on his level. If you are uncertain of which book to get, let him ask his current teacher on which CEFR level he is at currently, or compare his most recent proficiency test scores (TOEFL, IELTS) to the CEFR online and pick the book accordingly. Compare to the link below on page 2.
