Bobby Said:

Are the only opportunities to teach TEFL/ESL inside the US volunteer gigs?

We Answered:

In the States, a TEFL certification isn't the same as a teaching credential, so you probably can't work in a school. Try some rec. centers or adult or further education classes. People teach all kinds of things and get paid. Or, you can advertise to be a private tutor at schools where there are lots of ESL students.

Max Said:

Do you know of opportunities to volunteer abroad teaching English?

We Answered:

Type in volunteer jobs there are many that will come up and you will have to pay for yourself at first then if you stay longer they pay for you. Most are for 3 weeks and then you ask to stay and then it is less Have you tried the Peace Corp? When I was young they paid for everything.

There is a monthly and annual publication called "EL Gazette" which is one of the best in the business including links pages, training course information and a cross-sectional information on regions and countries.

"The EL Gazette Guide to English Language Teaching Around The World" 11th edition.

Of course information can go quickly out of date.

The quality of information is also key. For example, everyone gives advice, including Billy Graham.

Marvin Said:

can one make a living teaching ESL?

We Answered:

I've taught ESL for 17 years in a French Canada. I earn a great living! It has given me great opportunities.

My friend taught in Korea and Kuwait and made a fortune! Most foreign countries provide room and board. In Kuwait, my friend also taught private classes after school to big businessmen and their families. He had no expenses so everything went directly to his savings account. When he returned, he bought himself a condo, supply teaches in a high school, and plays the stock market.

A question about ESL teaching?

We Answered:

I understand you. I have taught ESOL for 8yrs and noticed that a lot of the non natives do have an accent - which some students do complain about. Having said this - its the non native's that are mostly qualified. I'm guessing people expect an English person to teach them English Language because of the Pronunciation.

I am from an African background - Its got to the point now, that at Inductions - the first day with my class in College. I tell them I was born in the UK and English is my first language. (that sort of irons out a few things.... lol) I also put on my CV cover letter or mention it at the interview.

Maybe the ads you see are focusing on spoken English.

Anyway don't let it get you down. :) Its just the way it is.

Best Wishes
