Is 50 years old too old for teaching ESL overseas?

We Answered:

Not at all! When I came to Prague to do my TEFL Certificate a year ago (http://www.teflworldwideprague.com/) there were 3 people in my class that were over 50. I think you should go for it. I teach in Prague, and although most of the teachers are in their 20's, I know plenty of teachers here that are older. I would totally do it! I was in the same position, with a secure job that I hated (at 32) and just decided to take the plunge. I have not looked ack since. And...if you hate it, you can always go back to America.

I thnk all you really need is an open mind, a LOT of energy and willingness to learn.

What should I know about Korean financial laws, before I go there to teach ESL?

We Answered:

Teaching English in Korea can be a wonderful or a terrible experience - or both. When I was American Citizens' Services officer at the US Embassy in Seoul, the largest numbers of calls we got were from American English teachers who were being cheated. Here is a general warning I wrote then, with links on the right side to other important topics, which is still on the embassy's web site. Please take it seriously:

What country pays the most if you plan to teach ESL overseas?

We Answered:

I have one friend that teaches ESL in South Korea as I type and another friend that does a lot of this in Japan and another that does it for China. And they all say they pay very generously. They pay for everything. The trip over, the accommodations, and anything else you can think of. I think the best paying is in Japan. I'm not positive, but considering it's economy, I would assume this is accurate. I hope this helps! :)

Do you know how to obtain a diploma to be able to teach ESL overseas?

We Answered:

Most jobs require a degree and a TEFL certificate. Only after you've been teaching for a few years is it worth going for higher qualifications for better paid jobs (e.g. the CELTA or a Diploma).

If you live in a city near to a decent school they may offer an in-house TEFL certificate. Alternatively you can try one of the reputable online courses.

Do you need a BA in Teaching to teach ESL overseas?

We Answered:

I live and work in Spain as an English teacher and when I started my job in a school in 1995 I had to produce my degree and teaching qualification. I then had to submit my teaching qualifications along with the recognition of my QTS plus a complete breakdown of my university results.
Added to this, I had to have my degree & post grad certificates stamped by the Dept. of Ed. in Ireland, the Ministry Foreign Affairs and the Spanish Embassy in Dublin. I then had to submit all these documents in their original form with a spanish translation for each. I had to wait and eventually I was issued with a document recognising my qualifications as a teacher in Spain.
From what I understand of European law, you should have the equivalent qualification as a native in the country you wish to teach in. This may seem unfair to you but there are so many unqualified British / Irish people teaching in Spain and other European countries and there are many qualified teachers in English who are not native but who are better trained than them. The laws in academies are less stringent but any one working as a teacher should have a valid teaching qualification.
