Foreign language teaching colleges?

We Answered:

The best qualificaitons to do internationally are the TESOL qualifications.

I know you are going to tell that TESOL, is teaching English as a second language. but the language teaching principles are the same.

I know Japanese and other language teachers who have studied the TESOL in australia.

So this might be a 6 month, 1 year or 2 year degree. Depends on where you study it.

Alternatively you can look at doing a formal teaching qualifications. Or if you already have a degree look at the masters in education. This can mean you can study anything.

Patricia Said:

Are there any really good books on foreign language teaching methods?

We Answered:

Look for books by Bill VanPatten. "Making Communicative Language Teaching Happen" is pretty good, but it only presents the theories and examples. The examples are good, and they should give you a "launching pad" to create your own activities.

Naomi Said:

What pragmatic phenomena play an important part in foreign language teaching?

We Answered:

First, it pays for a person to learn something of the structure of the language they want to learn, especially in the ways it differs from their native language. That is, if this language normally puts the verb at the end of the sentence, whereas English normally puts it between the subject and the object. However, this also presupposes they know something of the structure of their own native language. In America, that's not a foregoing conclusion. The schools teach very little of English structure anymore. I have asked any number of young people of my acquaintance, and they have never even heard of diagramming sentences, not even as an exercise the teacher might put on the blackboard, let alone something they would be expected to do. In my sixth grade class, we had ten sentences to diagram for homework every day.

Betty Said:

What are good schools in illinois for foreign language teaching (specifically german)?

We Answered:

Illinois State University has a really good teacher education program and a German program. I started about a year ago and after almost ten years of taking German classes and never really learning much, I've finally been able to become really proficient in it. Many of the teachers in Illinois are educated at ISU; it's a very good school for the field.
