Does anyone have any activites with detailed instructions in using a digital camera? Its to teach 11-16 in UK

We Answered:

Below are 2 entries you can try (Photographing fireworks and Panoramas). If you would like more, let me know.

Most digital cameras are slower than film cameras which make photographing fireworks with a digital camera more challenging. If the digital camera is an inexpensive model with auto focus only, you may not be able to photograph fireworks. But shooting fireworks can be accomplished if your camera permits manual settings.

A Use a tripod. It is impossible to hold a camera perfectly still for the length if time required for a long exposure.

B Use a triggering device such as a cable release or a remote triggering device to prevent moving the camera.

C Turn your mode dial to landscape to take care of focusing issues. Your manual should have instructions for this.

D Take pictures on the highest quality setting—reduced quality settings will cause some digital information to be lost. Again, your manual should explain all that.

There is a wonderful site from the New York Institute of Photography, written by Jim Barthman. It also includes links to other fireworks photography sites.

Panoramic pictures: When viewing a photo on this site, you can double-click a photo to enlarge it.

Shooting a panoramic view: This free shareware can help you put your pictures together

A The download for Windows:
AutoStitch makes a panoramic scene out of overlapping photos by removing the overlapped portions of the scene.

This free program comes with a sample set of photos on which to experiment. To use AutoStitch, you will have to select the whole set of photos. AutoStitch opens them simultaneously and puts them together and automatically saves the finished photo. It even opens your picture viewer to show you the result.

AutoStitch does not handle fish-eye lens photos very well. AutoStitch requires Windows 98, 2000, or XP.

B The download for Macs:
Hugin assembles a panoramic scene from overlapping photos on a Mac. With Hugin, you will need to select control points for each of your photos—these are points that overlap with one or more of the other photos.

Hugin is another free program from SourceForge. Hugin requires OS X 10.3, or 10.4

IS there really any sensible reason for teachers to not share the resources they make?

We Answered:

Unlike you, there are a fair number of teachers who are apathetic, lazy and uncaring, and cheerfully exploit the hard work of others. Those who are reluctant to share have probably become so over the years because of the abuses of the unmotivated teachers. If there are no reluctant teachers in your school, you have been greatly blessed and you probably have a good principal. The principal can really set the tone for things like sharing.

quote from a book
"Mainstream educational provision for children on the autistic spectrum can be inadequate or inappropriate. An increasing number of parents dissatisfied with the education system are looking elsewhere for an approach that will suit their children's needs. In "Home Educating Our Autistic Spectrum Children", parents who have chosen to home educate their children with autism or Asperger's syndrome candidly relate their experiences: how they reached the decision to educate at home, how they set about the task, and how it has affected their lives. Following these personal accounts, the final chapters offer practical advice on getting started with home education, legal advice from an expert in education law, and contact details of support organisations.
