Mathematics and reality - teachers please? We Answered:
I teach primary school, and I ALWAYS relate math to the real world. We start the school year off trying to think of anything that does not involve math (which is impossible, because everything - yes everything involves math in some way, shape, or form.)With that in mind, I also always make sure that my students understand the WHYS in math, not just the memorization or the hows. I have some children, who struggle in math, that the "why" is much more difficult to reach, but we keep at it until they understand why things go together, why we multiply, how it works, and when to use it. It takes a while, but it's worth it.
I too, was taught to just "do" math. I never understood it, and was actually a very poor math student all through school. Now, it is my favorite subject to teach!

How can I assist unwilling students without burning out?We Answered:
Try to use humor whenever possible and get them physically involved whenever possible. When teaching a history class, a 17th century writer referred to getting ready in the morning as "performing one's toilet," which really slowed the class down into sniggering, until they were asked: "Okay, repeat after me, 'Toilet, toilet toilet!'"
That turned into genuine laughter and the class went forward.
When teaching the word phalanx (a Spartan war maneuver), the class was asked to pick up their chairs, link arms in a line and form the then-revolutionary procedure.
They will almost always appreciate creativity, breathing life into subject matter that is conceptual and not related to their limited world view.
Good luck!

How do I record my own class lectures (audio only)? We Answered:
I have a cute and compact SONY ICD-P520. (IC RECORDER)It is DIGITAL and all the files upload to your computer in MP3 format. It is easy to use and I record all my classes with it to refer to when I am writing papers and to supplement my notes. Best 30-50 dollars I spent towards school!
Here is a great site with reviews:

There are other brands and some recorders even play music MP3 files.
There are models that are waaayy more expensive, try to find a rechargeable one maybe? Mine does eat through AAA batteries like crazy. I need a new set every 10 hours perhaps. But it works pretty well considering it's minimal price.
And DO NOT purchase it at a place like Best Buy or Circuit City. Those places are such RIPOFFS! In general you can find this product and most others for waaayyy cheaper on sites like Amazon or Crutchfield.

Teacher Demand and Shortage?We Answered:
Again, math teachers are in demand anywhere, especially if you speak english. My son applied to a school district in California while living on the east coast. 10 minutes after he applied, they called his cell phone & they offered him the job and paid his expenses to move to California. He's in an area that the government forgives his student loans for teaching.Adrian Said:
teaching mathematics for reluctant learners? We Answered:
teach them practical skills that they will use in the real world. I used a series of workbooks that taught these skills.Jeffrey Said:
What are the best universities for studying pure Mathematics in the US?We Answered:
Berkeley is usually ranked #1 -- but this year, US News gives the nod to Princeton. MIT, Stanford and Harvard are also up there. Here is a ranking of top graduate programs in mathematics. These schools all have outstanding undergraduate programs.
You are misinformed about Ivy League schools. I was really impressed with undergraduates that I taught at Berkeley and MIT -- but I was more impressed with my students at Penn. Faculty teach all upper division classes and most lower division classes.
