Harvey Said:

Can I apply for teaching jobs while finishing my student teaching?

We Answered:

Yes. You should be applying while you finish your student teaching. It's a good time to collect letters of recommendation and let people know you are interested in working. Schools may be starting their hiring process as teachers decide if they are moving or retiring. If you'll have certification by the new school year, apply now.

How to get teaching jobs in Bogota Columbia?

We Answered:

Yes. Gone are the days when blue-eyed foreigners would be deemed qualified to become English teachers. With a 'Revolución Educativa' underway, all state schools in the capital are to become fully bilingual by 2014, thus the need for qualified teachers.

Teachers in the public sector are required to have CEF B2 level by then - which most native people have as well as a university degree.

In Colombia, it is possible to due a one-year 'profesionalisation course' to allow professionals of other fields (like yourself) to become (language) teachers. This might suit you if you plan to be in Colombia for a long time.

On the other hand, there are countless institutes, academies and English schools where not even a TEFL is required so long as you are proficient in the language. (like Berlitz language schools)

Others like, the Centro Colombo Americano, in Medellin, Bogota and Cali require some sort of TEFL certificate. If you do not have one, I hear they can offer you an on-site course.

If you would like to get into a bilingual school (where they pay you more), then I suggest you DO get a TEFL certificate, preferably CELTA, DELTA, TKT or the Trinity.

As for language variation, American English is greatly sought after in Colombia, so do not worry.

Good luck and welcome to Colombia!
