Questions for language instructors?

We Answered:

a) It was my retirement hobby job.
b) It was a required university course. English is becoming the universal business language.
c) Making them use English as a means of communication.
d) A blackboard and I occasionally showed them pictures on my laptop.
e) Any kind of games, some discussions, playing games on their cell phones when I'm not watching.
f) Most effective, group work.
g) I think so. You don't have time to think.
h) Yes, in my case always. I don't speak Chinese.
i) They improved from having trouble putting five words in a sentence to being able to speak continuously for over two minutes. I did have students who had a number of years of teaching "about English".
j) I don't know. I only helped them acquire fluency rather than learn much new vocabulary.
k) When you have a class with a common L1, watch their lips when they're doing groupwork. If they're going too fast, they're using their L1.

** some Jordanians/Palestinians may use this section too.

I am wondering if the curriculum being presented online in English does suggest the language of instruction is English:

.....one would think so... perhaps.

Good luck with all your endeavours.

Is there any FREE program out there that teaches me scripting language or java technology from scratch?

We Answered:

I didn't research this, but the World Wide Web Consortium, W3C, is the best place to get browser friendly languages (http://www.www.org). ... now I did research it quickly and here's their link: http://www.w3schools.com/js/js_intro.asp.

If this guide doesn't get you the information you need, there is a forum there which will give you the perfect answer.

Edna Said:

what is language lab?

We Answered:

In my opinion, the best form of language lab is where an instructor is listening in to the students' repetitions of phrases and provides individual feedback to the students through their headsets. This was the situation available to me in a French immersion course.

Language labs can also be operated through computers and students see the print form of expressions, hear the correct pronunciation and phrasing and then have a chance to repeat what they heard (as many times as they feel necessary).

A classroom application that has been around for over 30 years is the "Language Master" machine (used in ESL and special education settings). Cards with magnetic tape strips are recorded with correct pronunciations and words or symbols are printed on the card. Students run the cards through the machine, listen to the teachers and record their own responses without taping over the teachers' speaking. The teacher can then listen to the students' at a later time.
