Teaching methods/ways/advice for the the following MATH problems?? (BTW, I'm teaching 7th Graders)?

We Answered:

I would suggest, for the first one, to tell your students to concentrate on the denominator, and ask which number is half of the denominator. (i.e. for a, 1/2 of 48 would be 24). Then ask if the numerator is the same as that number, smaller, or larger.

2) Explain that since none of these numbers are negative, zero will be the smallest. And because the rest are fractions where the number in the numerator is smaller than the number of the denominator, we know that they are less than one, so 1 is the largest number. From there it is a matter of figuring out which order the fractions go in and we have: 5/8, 3/10, and 3/11. of these, 5/8 is the biggest because it is bigger than 1/2 while the others are smaller than 1/2. (that is 5/8 > 4/8, 3/10<5/10, 3/11<5.5/11). then look at the two remaining 3/1 0 & 3/11. the numerators are the same but the denoms are diff. 11 is bigger so the 3 is divided over a larger number of portions which means there will be smaller portions.

its helpful with 7th graders to use a food analogy to teach fractions, i.e. I have 3 apples that I want to split between 10 people, and 3 between 11 people, which is bigger/smaller.

3) show them how to change the fractions so the denominators are the same: what is 5 * 11? 55. so common denom is 55. but you need to do the same to the top so 3*11 = 33/55 & 35/55. therefore 3/5 < 7/11, etc.

hope this helps!

what is reduction and absordum method used in teaching of math?

We Answered:

Its 'reductio ad absurdum', literally 'reduction to absurdity'; it refers to a method of proof where a proof is given by contradiction.
A popular proof illustrating the method is in proving the irrationality of sqrt(2)
We begin by supposing sqrt(2) = p/q for some p,q integers in their lowest forms. (i.e- we suppose that its rational)
then,
p^2 = 2q^2
p^2 is even, but for a square to be even it must be divisible by 4. then q^2 is even, but by the same argument q^2 has a factor of 4; i.e- p,q have a common factor of 2. But this contradicts our supposition that p,q are in their lowest terms. Then this there are no such p and q integers and we have irrationality for sqrt(2) by reductio ad absurdum.

what are some good teaching math methods and strategies for teaching k-2nd grade?

We Answered:

I agree with the previously poster. You also might want to set up a "classroom store". I did this when I taught 2nd grade and it worked well. We carried paper, pencils, pens, colored paper, small toys, etc. and sold them before school and during one of the lunches. The students learned how to handle money, planning skills, and how to cooperate with others.

Hope this helps a little ...

What is required to teach VCE maths methods in victoria australia?

We Answered:

To teach Year 11/12 you need three years of university level mathematics (and a Grad Dip in Education as well) - that gives you a major in maths.

You have a minor in maths (2 years of mathematics) and will be able to teach under year 10.

What tools / methods are used to teach math to blind students?

We Answered:

Here's a page with links for various methods (Braille & Nemeth code, tactile displays, and methods of explaining math verbally)

http://s22318.tsbvi.edu/mathproject/

Here's another link on Nemeth code, which is something like LaTeX for Braille.

http://www.dotlessbraille.org/nemethcode…

"The Nemeth Braille Code for Mathematics is a Braille code for encoding mathematical and scientific notation linearly using standard six-dot Braille cells for tactile reading by the visually impaired. The code was developed by Abraham Nemeth.

The Nemeth Braille Code is an example of a compact human-readable markup language."

If Singapore method of math teaching superior why is it not adopted in US schools?

We Answered:

Because our system has been dummy-ing down our students for 30 years. The teachers' unions refuse to let teachers be tested to show proficiency in the SUBJECTS THEY TEACH OUR KIDS!!! Do you really think they would allow a superior system? Do you really think they would be willing to learn this system in order to teach it??? Thank Ted Kennedy.
