Aaron Said:

What are the best methods of teaching reading?

We Answered:

As a teacher....there isn't one "best" way to teach anything. Depends on who you're teaching, their background knowledge, their experiences, their strengths and weaknesses. If you're teaching one person to read, you have to do what's best for him/her. If you're talking about teaching a classroom of students: use several methods and they'll pick up on the one that works for them. I use phonics, whole language, small groups, teach them the strategies in whole group, cooperative groups, decoding, etc.

Dwight Said:

what is the analytico-synthetic method of teaching to read?

We Answered:

Analytic vs. Synthetic Phonics

Analytic Phonics was the typical method of teaching children to read. For those who use Analytic Phonics the percentage of children who fail to learn to read is unacceptably high. The main problem with Analytic Phonics is it's far too concerned with the whole word, so reading becomes about memorising the look of the whole words; a very hit and miss approach which encourages guessing as a first reading strategy.

It is no surprise that across the English speaking world there is recognition that Analytic Phonics produced far too many children who were failing to learn to read as well as they should.

Cory Said:

Has teaching the "whole language" method of reading done an entire generation of kids a HUGE INJUSTICE?

We Answered:

Keep in mind that every child is different. That means that every child learns differently. Phonics may work for some students and whole language for others. I think that students who learn better my listening would be at a distinct disadvantage when teaching symbol - sound recognition. As a visual learner would not do as well having to repeat information presented as lecture only material.

I am more of a person who is believes in teaching using both methods. Whole language allows non readers to participate in the reading process while continuing on with phonics instruction. When only phonics is used the message can be lost because the student is working so hard to decode the letters into sounds. I would not want to use only whole language either. What good is the message of the text if the student is unable to read it for themself. Phonics also holds an important place when it comes to spelling instruction.

Why are Republicans unwilling to stand up to the substandard government school system?

We Answered:

Because of the lack of political and parental involvement in the past 40 years, the liberal socialist have control of it and it will take another 30 years to claim it back.

It is everybody's fault. I remember back in the 60s when the first order of business was you can't not fail a student more than twice and even then it could only be one year every three.

And the parents did nothing. The teachers were just happy to get the troublesome kids out of their classes.
