I am thinking about moving to a different state. Which state do you recommend?

We Answered:

Not sure what discipline your husband's MA will be in, but I would select a state that has a strong community college system. Many don't. California (sorry) and NY are two that are actually world-renowned in terms of their community college systems. When my husband (PhD in philosophy) was on the job market, he scoured the web for community college web sites and he located lots of jobs that weren't posted in, say, the Chronicle of Higher Education. I'm not sure whether you work or in what field, but in the current market for MA's who want to teach, you may have to let his job dictate where you move. Oregon is indeed a fantastic state, though it can also be plagued by the same expensive housing costs of CA. Good luck!

My teens don't like living in Florida?

We Answered:

Oh, I am just like your kids. I am 15 and moved. I used to live in Las Vegas where I always went to parties, shows, and concerts with friends. Now I live in a very small town with no designer stores or anything. Don't try to put them in clubs or anything. My mom tried to do that and it just made me mad. Try to take your kids to parties, concerts and stuff like that.

I wonder if you are my mom just changing the states and ages of your kids. They sound just like me!

I want to be a teacher?

We Answered:

I think you should follow what is in your heart. I knew I always wanted to be a teacher, but teachers actually told me I was too smart for it. So I planned on going to law school. I took the LSATs, decided against law school, got a job in publishing and the salary was even lower than teaching. I finally went back to school to become a teacher and I'm glad I did. It's a tough job, but it's a lot of fun; every day is different.

Teachers actually make fairly good money even in California. Some states and regions make more money than others and the more further education you get the more your salary goes up. You are right that many teachers are married and that may pay for the nice clothes, cars, etc.

I would strongly recommend it.

My kids don't like living in Florida?

We Answered:

...this is from someone who moved across the country in the middle of high school from somewhere I was really happy...

Give your kids time...moving during school sucks, especially if they liked where they were before. Give them as much time as they need...encourage them to meet new people and get involved at their schools and stuff, but don't force anything on them. Let them know that they aren't going to be able to move back because you and your husband have settled down and need to stay there right now...eventually, they'll get used to it, even if they still like California better. It's just a hard transition...it took me a year and a half to start to feel comfortable where I was after moving. The best thing my parents did for me then was to give me my space when I needed it, but made sure that they showed they were there to support me too.
I hope everything turns out well for your family :)
