Do people qualified to teach high school physics easily find a job?

I'm a physics major, and I hope to god there is more to do with that degree than teach. I would never, ever want to teach. I plan on going to grad school for Astrophysics, then try to work for NASA or some other space research institute.

We Answered:

Chances are you'll be asked to teach other subjects along with physics. At least to start. Physics is the least offered of science courses at high schools. There would have to be a fairly large enrollment to make the 150 or so students you'd need for a full load. (remember that a high school student often only needs it once in their 4 years, many do not take at all) A second problem is that as a new teacher, you'll find that others at the school are already teaching the courses - you'll have to build up some seniority.

The research I found says that only ten percent of physics teachers have no other preps.

I am a science teacher.

The subject I teach depends on the age and grade of the student.

My 7th grade students learn a general version of biology and health

grade 8 - what is called physical science. a general class consisting of some physics, chemistry and astronomy.

grade 6 - a general earth science class which would be geology, ecology and some physics

yeah. sadly the first answer is completely correct. I know how hard it is to graduate from college studying physics. But sadly all the jobs with Physics/math degrees are teaching, and usually you need a masters degree.
My friend has a MS in Physcis, and he looked for a job for one year, and eventually left U.S to teach physics in Saudi Arabia. its a sad story, life there is quite hard. But he needs the money to pay back his student loans.
Im an engineer and I find it hard to get hired now adays. But, I would recommend thatyou learn some programming classes too. And focus more on Antennas and radiation and physics of such nature if you want to work for a defense company.
