Why have schools gone away from teaching practical education?

We Answered:

They've left "practical" courses for the same reason they've left artistic courses--they're not tested. Since NCLB, federal funding has hinged on performance in select areas, none of which include the courses you cited...yet. There are efforts to make these courses tested also, a twisted way to give back their importance.

I would like every child to be prepared to go to at least a community college if later they decide they want to, but some simply aren't ready out of high school. Still, it would be a shame if they decided later in life that they wanted that for themselves and their children and they had to go back and do high school work to make up for discrepancies in their actual high school education.
