What can I do to be competitive in the job market? -Teaching?

We Answered:

It's great that you are taking the initiative to do your research now before it's too late. It is getting more competitive for all jobs and will be more so in the near future.

It is important for you to have relevant work experience on your resume. Tutoring is something that you may wish to consider. Place a ad at your college. Also volunteering at the local school where children may need assistance with reading or homework. Give them a call and ask how you can be involved. Otherwise try applying for casual work at a bookshop or somewhere else that may be relevant to your studies. Good Luck, Vicki

Is secondary teaching a rewarding job?

We Answered:

Children only have the power and the rights if the teachers lets them. Teaching can be such a rewarding job - helping people learn is giving them the tools to be successful at life. But without control, no one will learn anything. Children like boundaries and structure in their lives: have structure and boundaries in class and there will be control. Making a difference to someones life is surely the most rewarding thing in a job, and not something all jobs have

Does having a Masters make it harder to get a teaching job?

We Answered:

I'm going into education. My professors at school encourage us to all get our Masters. But they also warned us to be teaching first before getting our Masters so that we have a job first and don't have to worry about being over qualified. That is what I'm doing now. I think its great you are getting a Masters! I know some areas of education require a Masters, but as I am going into Elementary Education I will need to first get a job as a teacher then continue school and get my Masters. Going into Secondary will help with a Masters degree. Good job on getting the Masters.
