studying spanish helpful to getting a teaching job?

We Answered:

Take it from me, I learned Spanish in college specifically because I was planning on teaching--English, mind you, and not ESL. English positions are not as abundant as, say, math or science, and so I had options. Were I especially hard up, I could have done lateral entry Spanish teaching (which, in fact, I have ended up doing).

The community at the school I ended up at is less than 1% Hispanic, but I was able to help a non-English speaking student get home and form a lasting bond with a lost student. I interpreted for her on the bus 1 day, and though it did not get me a job, I know it got my principal's attention that I had that skill.

You will find that if you continue with your Spanish, your skills will be in demand, and you will probably benefit from "no" being the same in both languages. My elementary teacher friends have asked me to translate forms and documents, my other peers have asked me to speak to parents who spoke no English. This comes after, hiring, however, but could prove invaluable when you need new references.

As for me, I like being in the know, too. I like that my Spanish speaking students cannot get one over on me--although that took a knowledge of slang beyond the textbook I got by spending time in Mexico (and marrying a Mexican, I confess).

As for getting hired, it certainly will make you stand out, especially if you can prove fluency. If you've had 4 years and have a rep for skill with it, it can only help your chances.

What other jobs are possible with a degree in Secondary Education and Spanish besides teaching?

We Answered:

if you're fluent in spanish there are many jobs in the private and public sector involving translators. businesses use translators all the time and if you have a business background so much the better. here in las vegas the casinos have hosts just for foreign tourists that can show them around and tend to their needs in their home language. in the public sector the gov't always needs translators in law enforcement and diplomacy.
i'd say if you want to diversify yourself take some business, political science, criminal justice or hospitality courses. perhaps you can pursue a minor in one of those areas that interests you. then when it comes time to interview for a non-education job you have that course work background to rely on.
