Wesley Said:

What are some learning activities that I could do with my 17 month old son?

We Answered:

For toddlers - everything they do is a learning experience! Toddlers tend to be good at the things they're interested in (and capable of) there is a HUGE range of what is normal for toddler development - and it's all ok. Some say 0 words, some have 300. There really isn't much you can do to push them along at his age. Foster his interests and go with them - don't push new ones on him. Studies have shown that trying to force a child to learn something they're not interested in, or ready for can lead to a dislike of the subject and an eventual delay.

You can extend and enhance what he knows already though, through talking while you play. If he's filling and emptying containers with toys - you can use words like "In and Out" "Full and empty" but make it natural - kids absorb best when you're not drilling things - when he dumps something "Oh! It's empty now" and when he fills it up "All full!!" Do things like that ALL day! It will help him learn new concepts.

As far as some kids being far along - it's normal, kids have very different skill levels. Some are naturally faster - some of those fast kids will stall out around school age while the others catch up. Some kids can do many, many things, but aren't very good at any one activity - where as others excel in one area, and lack ability in others.

I would advise against any sort of formal activities, like flash cards and such - he doesn't have the attention span or ability to understand yet - so you'll find yourself frustrated and he'll likely lose interest.

Just talk to him about everything you and him do, all day long. Point things out "Thats a green block" or "Theres the letter A!" he'll pick them up when he's ready to.

Carmen Said:

is there any differences between teaching tools and learning activities?

We Answered:

They're similar, but a teaching tool could be an object like a workbook, math manipulatives, audio visual equipment, etc. You use the tools to perform the learning activities.

Lester Said:

we are to develop a new English course to be taught over a duration of 42 hours. can i have some examples?

We Answered:

An example of a course description might be, "To provide students the opportunity to develop basic skills in speaking and writing English as a second language."

Instructional objectives might be stated, "The student will be able to (speak, write, match or whatever it is you expect the student to do after instruction: 50 nouns, noun/verb agreement, etc.)

Since 42 hours of class is involved, think of 2 hour sessions for example. This means you need about 20 lessons (content) and probably an obj. for each one. Perhaps converational English for a final - whatever.

Grading procedures might include attendance, quizzes, final exam, or product or activity. Just state these. If you want to assign a percentage to each you could.

I think this info should get you started. Search for syllabus examples for more help.

Hugh Said:

What are some teaching activities that teachers can use to teach students?

We Answered:

my high school social studies teacher--a favourite teacher of myself and most other students--held various "field trips" that only took up one class period and cost nothing! for example, he used to be a globe-trotter so he had many sets of slides her personally took from trips to the USSR (in the 80s), India, etc. These were all used in conjunction with appropriate units/topics. He also led local field trips, i.e. to the local museum (free admission) which, oddly, none of us had been to since early elementary school. We learned a tonne about local history. Another "field trip" involved making a scaled timeline that stretched about 10 blocks, straight from my school to the cemetary :-) and it represented the history of humanity. Totally put things into perspective.
So basically...don't be afraid of "Field trips"--the best ones aren't usually major undertakings. They're the best hands-on type of learning activity a student can have.

Kirk Said:

What sorts of learning activities teach children problem-solving and critical thinking?

We Answered:

Reading. Reading is everything. Give them time to read, encourage them to read, model reading being enjoyable by reading in front of them. Reading. It expands their vocabulary, keeps their imagination active, and lets them see plenty of well-written sentences. As a former high school and now university instructor, I get plenty of students who arrive unable to spell, can't decode words, have a severely limited vocab, and a crippled imagination. All they know is what they see and hear on their iPods.

If you want loosely to highly structured activities, work on things that involve metacognition. Google "inquiry learning activities".

Richard Said:

What is a learning activities when it comes to 1 to 3 year toddlers?

We Answered:

Sorting shapes (the kind that you have to match the shapes with the correct holes)

ABCs and counting to 5 or 10 (you can have them counting blocks or other objects) (You can make up a silly dance for the ABCs)

Any sing-along songs

And here's a bunch of other activities to try:
