Wanda Said:

how would I know if my child has a learning problem.?

We Answered:

They can test for that in grade school, unless you need it sooner, I think you have to pay for it your self, your pediatrician should be able to direct you in the right path

Has being a Sylvan Learning Center student benefited your academic performance?

We Answered:

Last year my 3rd grader completed 90 hours , but then we stopped in the summer. I was very skeptical of Sylvan because it's expensive, it's not one on one, and it can be a huge time commitment (we did 4 hours per week 2/session).

But, after dropping out for the summer, I'm thinking of going back. Last year the teacher said she could not believe what a difference just the first month did for my daughters confidence and improved math / reading. The reading specialist in our school thought the tests Sylvan used were very comprehensive.

So while I'm still hesitant, we did have a great experience and I think it really benefited my child. I just really hate to spend that kind of money and not get one on one. But I can't seem to find the right one on one tutor that provides the same results as Sylvan did.
Hope that helps.

Wesley Said:

Can someone give me more information about applying for tutoring position at Sylvan Learning Center?

We Answered:

When I had a job there, you had to have teaching certification.

And as you can imagine, the hours aren't flexible, because there's only a short time that high school students have to come in.

Marjorie Said:

Do i need the license to open a learning center for kids?

We Answered:

It all depends on your location.

I'd ask your local courthouse just to be sure.

Jonathan Said:

What is student-centered and student-iniated learning/teaching?

We Answered:

As a teacher I can tell you it is when the teacher plans activities that are tailored to the students. For instance, this would not include lectures and teacher-centered teaching because the teacher is controlling the conversation and learning in the classroom. Student centered activities would be group work, presentations, discussions, inquiry activities. The thought is that students are in control of their own learning and are teaching themselves the information instead of the former.
