Billy Said:

I'm training to be a teaching assistant but in the past i've had mental health problems?

We Answered:

By mental health issues do you mean depression, schizophrenia, bipolar? As long as you have these issues under control and I would assume that you are on medication you do not have to disclose any of this personal information to you employer. Mental health problems are just that health problems and they are confidential. That is why you doctor can not disclose this diagnosis to anyone else. If you need some further advice with regards to this issue feel free to contact me and I will try to assist you. If everyone was upfront about personal issues nobody would be hired. It would be like me going in for a job and saying that I have a bad back. There are some issues you keep to yourself and mental health has such a stigma attached to it still, that it is best to not mention this. Discuss these concerns with your physician, counselor, or therapist. You will end up being oppressed, and there are many individuals who have mental health problems that have successfully worked their entire career without any type of incident. Hope this helps and stop worrying everything is going to be ok.

Teaching Assistant in UK?

We Answered:

Lots of people seem to like the idea of working as a teaching assistant. For many mothers with children at primary school, the job is attractive because they can go to school with their children and keep a close eye (or attempt to interfere) on what the teachers are up to.

There are various things you can do to make your application more attractive. One would be to show that you have good ICT skills (which primary teachers often lack) or good behaviour management skills and/or sports coaching qualifications.

One problem would be that you have a degree and a PHD, making you more highly qualified than most of the teachers.

Christian Said:

No qualifications, very little experience, how to get a job as a teaching assistant/nursery nurse? UK.?

We Answered:

Unfortunately if she's looking for as high paid job in childcare she will be VERY disappointed. Most setting workers such as assistants, nursery nurses etc are on minimum wage maybe up to £6.50 if lucky!

To get higher up the ranks to earn more money she'll need experience in the lower paid positions, well qualified over a level 4 etc.

Tell her best thing to do is to spend some voluntary time in settings such as creches, day nurseries etc-they often run in summer holidays, later hours than a preschool so she could maybe fit around her regular job she's in now. Otherwise the only way to get a good childcare job is to put in the effort now---to drop hours at her main job and get some real experience as a volunteer. This means she'll meet people in the industry who may be willing to take her on as a paid employee in the future.

Tell her to pop to:
Local Childrens Centre
Child DEvelopment Centre
Family Centre
County Council-LEA

They may be able to offer more support!
