Teaching college/high school?

We Answered:

It is not realistic.

I see similar questions often. You are qualified to teach college - but as you rightly say, not high school. All states require state certification (often called a credential)

Hawaii requires a credentialing program (tests, methods, curriculum and student teaching) as well as your subject matter verification tests. See here:

Here are the list of credentialing programs that offer Hawaii credentials:

You might hear others talk of alternative licensure - do not mistake it for "fast track". All the requirements of traditional program fitted into after school and weekends for two to three years - and notice that only a couple of the programs offer this with an asterisk - seems there is not a big alternative need on the islands.

All states are similar - programs are 2-3 years if you are working - (1.5-2 if you are a full time student) but in larger states the alternative programs are more needed. If you were math or science that would helpgetting into an alternative also.

Good Luck!

Hippies should be writing music, not teaching college courses. Don't you agree?

We Answered:

To say a hippie is beneath a maggot on the scale of absolute values to this planet is an undeserved insult to the maggot. When they stopped bathing and getting haircuts and sat in their bedroom getting high under a red light bulb they were easy to spot and avoid. But they used what few functioning neurons they had left in their skulls and began bathing again, they shaved and got haircuts, put away the beads and headbands and went back to the universities that they skipped classes at for semesters at a time and got a job. I could see hiring them to wash the chalkboard but to write on it???? It's just a sad commentary on the state of our "higher" education.

How do i get a job teaching creative writing?

We Answered:

Well, you need either an advanced degree or some professional experience as a writer. Community Colleges are - most of the time - accredited, so they are not going to hire "Joe Schmoe" who has no credentials.

Definitely get published too. Never hurts to have your name in print, even if it is some crazy magazine with a publication of 100.

Good luck!

What's the point of going to college for writing?

We Answered:

college expands your view on other writing styles, and more words. the more vocabulary you have, the better stories you can write. i'm a good writer myself, but my teachers and everyone keep on telling me to go to college for writing.

the reason why, i think, is because if you try to get a job right now on writing, all the publishing comp. has to go by is your word that you're a good writer. they want proof, and that's where your degree comes in. Not only do they have the proof, but you also have a better idea on what you need to be a successful writer.

no one, not even singers/actresses, can go into a business just freely. they have to take many classes to enhance their talent. same goes for writing. you may have a really awesome talent, that you're super good, but in order to be extraordinarily brilliant, to where you'll get hired, and to where you can write stories people will want to read (organization, spelling, grammar, plot line, etc.), you have to go college...to ENHANCE your talent. to PERFECT it.

i hope this helps you. =D

(i am also a writer, i write short stories, and poems ^_^)
