I was taught that the only way to stand up to a bully is to make it known that you won't take his, or anybody else's sh*t. Being the short fat kid growing up made my life from the 5th to 9th grade suck.I'm still short, but not fat. I also come armed with martial arts. As for subjects....pretty much everything you listed, minus the poetry. I enjoyed math so much that I pretty much disregarded everything else.

I remember a teacher giving the class a demonstration of the abacus.As well as discussing other means of doing 'sums' as they used to
call Arithmetic. She discussed that before there were tablets for doing
our sums, spelling and other subjects, children used small slates at
their desks that they would put their answers on, to show the teacher.
The school I went to, used teaching aids to show how things had
been done in past generations. And it was a learning experience to
discover new things, that were actually very old.
We used flash cards for practicing Arithmetic, as well as problems
our teacher put on the black board. Oh, the dreaded black board.
I waited in terror, lest my name be called to solve one of the problems.
Then I'd have a brain freeze, trying to focus on the numbers in front
of me. I was never so glad as to leave those lower grades behind,
and the trauma, with having to be up in front of the class, solving
those problems.
