I'm not sure how it works in your state but here in Texas, if you have a basic degree in education, then you can take the state certification exam to be certified in different areas. I knew someone who taught band for several years, decided she wanted to do something different, took the certification exam for general elementary and is now teaching third grade. Personally, I think if you want to teach elementary music then you should take the courses in college and get a music education degree. Just my 2 cents. :)Judy Said:

Many high schools are beginning to offer (if they don't already) programs that will allow high school seniors to observe classrooms. Typically this is categorized as a type of child development course. At the school I used to teach at, it was duel credit with the local community college.You may also check with local career centers. They may be able to connect you with area programs, such as head start, the ymca, or other programs you could visit after school. Some schools will partner with Head Start programs and you can earn high school credit for volunteering time each week.
Talk with your guidance counselor to see if your school or community has a similar program. He or she will be the only one that can truly answer this question for you.

In the beginning of the year, teach them all the same. Teach them the basics of music and reading music.Then later on separate them into groups based on grade level and how well they understand concepts.
After you think they all have it, give them packets of music or worksheets to learn.
Also, once a week you should have them go home and write a few measures of music and have them bring it to class. This can get them active and reinforce their music skills so they don't lose the skills you taught them.
Start out teaching them classical. If you can play classical music, you can play anything. Then teach them big band styles of music (1940s). After that move onto 1950s and 1960s pop. This way they know where music evolved from and that today's music isn't the only thing out there.
