Francis Said:

In elementary and high school social studies we get a very canned education. Why aren't we taught about?

We Answered:

"Social Studies" and "History" in the U.S. public education are mostly to instill patriotic feelings in the youth of America. For instance, we are taught and re-taught American History while ignoring most of the rest of the world. Our government funds our education, and they want to make loyal adult citizens out of us. Obviously, other areas of history have to be pushed aside in order to make room for this barrage of patriotic material. Thus, most Americans believe that 'America is the greatest country in the world' but can rarely offer proof to back this up.

Which should I teach--elementary school or secondary social studies?

We Answered:

Yes, the social studies market is saturated at the moment. The big areas are math, science, ESL, and special ed.

In addition, finding a regular teaching job with a master's might be hard to find because schools wouldn't want to pay their employees more than they have to (higher degree = higher salary).

Another thing to consider is that if you decide to go into elementary teaching, you would be certified to teach from K-6 or K-8, and with this market especially, it'll be hard for you to choose to teach in only the upper grades. You might very well end up teaching the lower grades. So if you have a strong preference for older students, you might want to stick with secondary education.

Monica Said:

Social Studies Lesson Ideas?

We Answered:

I suggest that you go to a local elementary school and talk to a teacher there. Ask if you can borrow, or just look at, a social studies book for 2nd graders.

BTW, schools are always looking for volunteers, if you are not already a volunteer at a local school, then you are missing a wealth of opportunity.
