You really MUST invest in either a field of study at college that covers ESL or take an external course (certificate) that will qualify you to do ESL - without this your 'native speaker understanding' of English will come under scrutiny & you'll loose face if you can't tackle grammar questions with confidence.I taught without it - just a university BA degree - but learnt on the run, not advisable as the ESL 'industry' is more competitive these days. If they run the JET programme, try that or just hit the streets of any major Japanese city & go see all the various ESL servicve providers.

Check out your local university who might run such courses. Alternatively is there a school which teaches English as a Foreign/Second language to people? They often run certification courses.If that doesn't work, you can think about taking an online course to get certified (e.g. http://icalweb.com).

For an entry level job, there is no difference. Online certificates are becoming much more popular and as long as you go with a reputable company you will be fine.There are a lot of providers out there who will tell you that you MUST have teaching practice and a minimum of x hours, but the truth is that most schools just want to see a piece of paper with TEFL Certificate at the top and your name at the bottom.
But, to make the most of it, you want to learn something useful so you can teach the class well and get the most out of your time teaching.
So if you don't have the money to blow on a big, expensive course, online tefl certs are a fine alternative.
I'd recommend getting an online cert now and then in a few years time if you want to go for higher level jobs, go for a CELTA. But for the first few years online is no problem.
