You need a degree or take an TESOL course, which could take up to a year.S.Korea is getting harder to teach there, don't go if you don't have the papers, they are getting really stricked about it (becasue of the economy and people are having less children yadda yadda)...the food is really good...you will want other foreign teachers around so don't go to some remote secluded place, although it sounds like an adventure, it would be terribly hard. Be open minded and you will be fine. Some people can't take the culture change....it can be hard. I loved the food...if you know of any korean restaurants, I would suggest going to get a sense of it...some people leave because of the food alone. And, umm, if you are a bigger person, bring cloths because it can be hard to find big sizes (I was a size 7 when I was there are and sometimes only fit into the biggest size they had....) In all, I loved it, The people are amazing, so honest, caring. You will have bad days, but you have those anywhere you are. And go to the bath houses....
As far as the classes, if you mean teaching, usually you teach from about 3pm till about 10pm. You should look to make about $2000 (2,000,000 Won) a month. You can save lots....you're living should be paid for.
And last, you should go no matter the work that you have to put into it...its always worth following a dream

I'm an American and have lived in Japan a long time, many of the English teachers I've met have NO teaching certificate.
I get asked constantly here in Tokyo; "Would you teach me English?"

Depends on where you live.CELTA is probably the best. LCCI and Trinity/RSA are also very good.
Most countries offer their own version of the CELTA and you will have to check this out - the best place to look is the dept of educations website - they usually have a section on teacher accreditation.
In Ireland, it has to be ACELS approved (and you have to have obtained a primary degree (in any subject) first.
Online programmes are limited in that they don't offer classroom practice - which is essential for any reputable qualification. Most schools will not take on someone who has not been observed teaching in front of a class. Schools who do take on unproven teachers usually pay badly and are in general a bit dodgy. All of the reputable TEFL courses have at least 6 hours of observed teaching practice.

With disregard to the cost, you should go for any ESL certificate, as long as they are more than 100 hrs. Anything less than a 100 hr. certificate will not be accepted by some countries such as S. Korea. TESOL is North American, and CELTA is British. Some former British colonies such as Malaysia, Hong Kong, etc, are very particular and only prefer you to have a CELTA rather than a TESOL. It's your choice of which countries you would to teach in for the future.Dustin Said:

Do you want to teach English the language, or English Literature? Where?In California, US, to get a single subject teaching credential in English, you need a BA in English or you need to pass the appropriate English equivolency exam. You also need to pass the CBEST. You must also take some other courses to get your credential.
My advice is to contact the education department of a local university and ask what other guidelines there are, as they vary by location.
