What are some advantages and disadvantages of teaching English in China? We Answered:
The experience of visiting such an amazing place and living in a place that most foreigners don't get to experience are definitely advantages. You'll get to teach children who will always come to class and want to learn everything. You'll learn basic Mandarin faster than taking classes in America. You'll experience real China and eat real Chinese food (which is delicious), plus you'll see Chinese culture first hand. The pay is not the best, depending on the program and school. If you're going to teach to save for your retirement then it's not a good idea. Being a foreigner and getting use to life in China can be tough, especially if you don't know the language well, but you'll eventually learn.
I'm a Chinese-American and I can't wait to teach in China. It was be rewarding and interesting at the same time.

What is the average salary for an English teaching position in China? We Answered:
I think it sounds fairly good. However, it completely depends on what part of China you are in! More urban areas will pay more and have a higher cost of living. If you aren't in a major urban area, then that pay sounds very good to me. If you are, you might want to see what other positions in your area pay.Hong Kong pays a lot more than mainland China, but the cost of living is MUCH higher there too.
In case you didn't know - that salary is about $830/month. You shouldn't ever go to China planning to save money for back in the US. However, you can have a nice lifestyle in China for that amount. In the medium size city where I worked, a taxi ride to town is 10 yuan, a good cheap meal is 4 yuan, and the nicest restaurant in the city is 70 yuan. You'll be making much, much more money than the average Chinese person in your area, so keep that in mind when thinking about the salary.
You might want to ask for more details about the apartment - they can vary a lot in quality and in what's included.

What I need to know before teaching english in China? We Answered:
Firstly, no you don't have to have a degree but it's very useful if you do! You will still be able to get work without a degree but you'll have to hunt to find it.You'll need a TEFL certificate; this will help you get work (especially as you don't have a degree yet) and also help you to teach!
You DON'T need to know Mandarin. There are a couple of reasons for this: in the classroom you'll be speaking English and all lessons are done in English. Ok, it may help outside the classroom but then again you may be working in a region where Mandarin is not spoken or understood. So I'd advise not to learn any Chinese language till you're there.
You will make enough money to live reasonably well and take a few excursions. You won't get rich but depending on your lifestyle and spending habits you should be ok.
