Teaching English Korea...Would you recommend going through a recruiter or looking independently?

We Answered:

The bad thing about recruiters is they can behave similar to used car salespeople when trying to get you a job. Generally, they are not concerned about the conditions at the school or the employee, they are focused on getting as many people hired as possible as thats how they make their money.
I hate to make all recruiters sound bad, but I know a lot of them are this way. It just makes sense, right? If you do go with a recruiter, I would check out footprintsrecruiting.com. I think they are pretty reputable.
I have signed contracts at three different places, and all of those jobs I found on my own. One plus about looking on your own, you can kind of get a feel for who you'd be working for before you sign a contract. If you get a bad vibe, you can just move on to the next one.
Additionally, I would suggest working for a public school. SMOE is the place to contact for a public job in Seoul, if you want outside of Seoul, you will need to check out EPIK. Public schools give you a lot more vacation and are not focused on making money, as with a "hagwon" (private language institute) as opposed to providing quality education, and you get a lot more paid vacation.
To sum up, I would look for a public school job with SMOE as I believe Seoul is a good place to do your first year as an English teacher. You can go to their website, or I think Footprints Recruiting does hiring for them as well.
Good luck with your search.
